I just had the chance to see AVENUE Q playing at the Wynn in Las Vegas. It is scheduled to close on May 28 so if you have not seen this excellent production I urge you to take advantage of the few weeks left in its run.

I thought it was thoroughly enjoyable....very professionally done. My favorite number? "The Internet is for Porn" of course, I "grab my dick and double click", lol.

So, why do we think the show didn't really do so well in its Vegas venue? (It's being replaced by Spamalot shortly). Too "arty," perhaps, compared to the usual stereotypical Vegas-type entertainment? Too liberal (i.e. as in that fun lyric "George Bush is only for now") for Nevada? Maybe Vegas isn't ready for depictions of puppets having sex? :D

Still haven't had the opportunity to see the show in NYC, but the cast album still makes me laugh out loud after repeated hearings (while, in comparison, the Spamalot CD only gets smiles, and occasional laughs now). Very clever, funny stuff!

Excellent question, Bostonman.

I had heard that failing attendance was the reason for the early closing ot its run, yet the theater was filled by my guess at 90% capacity on a Monday evening. I don't think that is too bad.

I think maybe name recognition may be a problem....does the average Vegas vacationer know Avenue Q? Also, it is a more intimate show....not the big glitzy revue many people are looking for here. Still, I think it is a far better show than most of what is offered. I am disappointed that it is closing. I really have no great desire to see Spamalot.

Look at this as the glass could be half full. The run of "Avenue Q" blocked the show from touring, especially in L.A. due to its close proximity to Vegas.

"Chicago" also fared poorly when it opened the theatre at the Mandalay Bay back in the 90's. It's been replaced by "ammam Mia" which has been there for several years now. (UGH)

Dare (!) I say that if another production of "Chicago" were to open in Vegas now that the movie has made its mark, it would be a different story.

"Ammam Mia"? (lol)

Actually, I wish they'd just send ALL these so-called "jukebox musicals" to Vegas where they basically belong, and keep them away from Broadway... :-(

Meanwhile, I've heard rumors that there may be a tour of Avenue Q after all - though to quote another song, who knows where or when?

Hell - I'm just hoping they release the rights to the show in the very near future - I'm dying to get to do it!! :-) (Though I do think the show won't have as much of an afterlife in professional regional or amateur theatre as it could have, due to the puppetry skills required.)
