I know outside of Fire Island, Long Island is not the most progressive part of New York. But things seem to be getting worst, and I like to know why. Growing up here, Nassua County was always a complete wasteland, but I knew there were a few gay bars in Suffolk. And remember there being a lot more ads before I started hiring. Now there's nothing. It also seems that even Fire Island is slowing down. I'm surprised how little ads are there during Pride month.

What happened?

I couldn’t even begin to guess but I get why I’ve been contacted by a few guys and asked if I’ll travel to LI from the city. And I do say yes as long as the LIRR can get me there, haha.

What is your definition of non-wasteland?

I'm in SF Bay suburbia. 20 miles outside the city, 30-min drive in non-commute times. If gay bar count, and local rentguys, are the standard, suburbia has always been something of a wasteland. And, the bar-count has reduced over the past 25 years.

However, the number of gay bars is down even in SF. My hypothesis: its not just about location. Its also about societal changes. Young gay people dont feel the same need and pressure to interact in gay-only venues. A group of gay and straight people will socialize together, and needn't worry about meeting other gays in a mixed venue. i.e., there's less demand for gay bars.

San Francisco Magazine dedicated an issue to gays in the Bay Area years ago... it was fascinating. And I'm sure the reports are now a little outdated. It was interesting to read young peoples' comments. They're not interested in hanging out in the Castro, or going on gay cruises.

I don't know about rentguy-count... seems about the same in this market compare to 10 and 20 years ago. I would have expected major growth in San Jose/Silicon Valley. I'm guessing its always been tilted towards older clientele. In 10-20 years, will aging gays, who grew up and socialized more openly, hire at the same rate? Don't know... suspect not, but then, fantasy and erotic services seem to endure any cultural shifts. There's a reason for the term "oldest profession."

I have some fond memories of the bars I frequented, or the gay cruise group I used for a Caribbean trip. But if progress and acceptance means that gay-only establishments are disappearing, is that wasteland, or just new-land?

Caveat: I'm aware NorCal, isn't representative of everywhere. If places are disappearing due to intolerance, conservatism, or hate... that's something else. I know next to nothing about LI; perhaps I shouldnt equate the greater NYC area to Northern CA.

Apologies for typical social media reaction. OP with simple question... got a tangential editorial in response,.

10-15 years ago there were about a dozen gay bars scattered on Long Island. At least half were in Nassau County and on a Fri and Sat night they were packed. Then law enforcement started cracking down on drunk driving and guys started heading into the city using the LIRR. Slowly the bars started closing up. Today we have 3....1 in Nassau and 2 in Suffolk but they are finding it difficult to stay afloat. Not to mention that the bar scene in the city was so much more versatile than on Long island.

As far as escorting on Long Island is concerned there are many escorts listed under NYC that are actually living out here but find it easier to work in the city than here for a variety of reasons. One dancer at Adonis from Long island told me that he preferred coming into NYC by LIRR and taking subway to a client's apt rather than driving all over Long island for an appt. And after he had his choice of bars to go to rather than be stuck with maybe 1 out here.

I have talked to a few escorts willing to come out here if I paid for an UBER and I will not do that. I do not haggle with their rate but Uber is a no. First off I am only free mostly Sat eves and with traffic an Uber can take 90 mins or more when the LIRR is only 35 mins to me from midtown. The escort is making a nice hourly rate. If I told an employer that they had to Uber me to and from my job I would be on unemployment.

Thanks @LIguy !!! I figured that there had to be guys who live out here, but only advertise in the city. I wonder why they don’t put LI as a travel location in RentMen, but your explanation covers it.

Never heard of that app. Just search the App Store an couldn’t find it. Now I went to there twitter but the link is not working. I’m guessing that it’s only available for Androids

I would guess that the main reason gay bars are diminishing is that they're rarely a place where people go to connect any more. When I was in my 20s and I wanted to have sex (which was often), I would go to a gay bar and pick someone up. Now, people used Grinder or other apps to connect. I didn't go to a bar to drink; I went to hook up. These days, people mainly go to bars to drink, which is a much smaller audience.
