I used to work in health care, and I will second all of these suggestions. I received promotions and pay raises based primarily on unsolicited notes about the quality of my care that patients and their families sent to the administration. Flowers (and healthy treats!) and a card sent to the floor nurses’ station are always appreciated!

Very true. I’ve said this before and will say it again: negativity is seldom a good motivator. Wanting to improve your health or appearance is a worthy goal. However, beating yourself up because of your current health or appearance is not likely to be a successful strategy. I only made positive changes after accepting, even embracing, my (formerly) obese and out-of-shape body.

I used to be very obese. I’m still a big guy. I always tell providers in advance and ask about their tables’ capacity. I also have a couple of minor disabilities that I notify about as well. At my heaviest, I did break a bed during an enthusiastic coupling!
