When I saw him last year in Chicago, he hadn't given up his career. He was just doing it on the weekends and when he traveled for business. He said he doesn't book appointments when he is at home in Milwaukee. God knows I tried since I am so close.

In Chicago, the rates for a "regular" guy are in the $250 - $300 range with the better guys pushing the $300 most of time. Rates do peak slightly during the special events such as the Grabbys and Market Days but I'm not sure how much they spike because I don't typically hire during those events.
