Joe Orton (1933-1967) shocked, outraged and amused audiences with his black comedies during a short but prolific career as a playwright and author that began in 1964 and ended when he was murdered by his lover Kenneth Halliwell three years later at age 34. Orton is said to have loved this picture of himself as a young man because he thought it made him look a little like Dirk Bogarde. Dirk Bogarde (1921-1999) twice won the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. In a second career as a writer, he penned seven best-selling volumes of memoirs and six novels. Because male homosexual acts were criminal during most of his career, and could lead not only to career ruin, but to prosecution and imprisonment, he repeatedly denied that his relationship with his longtime partner, Anthony Forwood, was anything other than platonic. Vince Edwards (1928-1996) studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts; his classmates included Anne Bancroft. John Cassavetes and Grace Kelly. In 1950, at age 22, he was signed to a contract by Paramount Studios and made his debut as "Vincent Edwards" in 1951's Mister Universe. He had leading roles in several films, but it wasn't until he appeared as the title character in the highly successful TV series Ben Casey (1961-66) that he achieved stardom. Philippe Halsman - JUMP! http://philippehalsman.com/wp-content/uploads/halsman-dali1.jpg Halsman with Salvador Dali Philippe Halsman (1906-1979), born in Riga, Latvia, began his photographic career in Paris. In 1934 he opened a portrait studio in Montparnasse, where he photographed many well-known artists and writers (André Gide, Marc Chagall, Le Corbusier, and André Malraux) using an innovative twin-lens reflex camera that he designed himself. Part of the great exodus of artists and intellectuals who fled the Nazis, Halsman arrived in the United States in 1940, having obtained an emergency visa through the intervention of Albert Einstein. His prolific career in America over the next 30 years included reportage and covers for every major American magazine. These assignments brought him face-to-face with leading statesmen, scientists, artists and entertainers. His incisive portraits appeared on 101 covers for LIFE magazine, a record no other photographer could match. In 1941, he began a thirty-seven year collaboration with Salvador Dali resulting in a stream of unusual “photographs of ideas,” including “Dali Atomicus” and the “Dali’s Mustache” series. This post focuses on Halsman's JUMP photographs. In the early 1950s, he began asking his subjects to jump for his camera at the conclusion of each sitting. He called his method jumpology “When you ask a person to jump, his attention is mostly directed toward the act of jumping, and the mask falls, so that the real person appears.” Halsman explained. Gilbert Roland (1905-1994). Born in Mexico as born Luis Antonio Dámaso de Alonso, he originally intended to become a bullfighter like his father. Instead, he made his film debut at age 20 and was still working as an actor into the early '80s.
