  1. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets overlooked but even if it gets some nominations, I'd take any comers for a bet that says it will not win a single Oscar.
  2. No, The Martian producers asked to be included in Comedy/Musical category figuring the competition was lighter. They were right. Can't blame everything on the silly Hollywood Foreign Press.
  3. I hated the movie so, yes, I am overlooking Michael Fassbaender in STEVE JOBS. I like him but this isn't one of his best performances, IMHO. But I'm sure he'll get nominated. Although I've yet to meet an Oscar voter who liked the film. He should have been nominated for SHAME.
  4. Awful paper. Sucky cultural coverage. The FT still thinks it's 1956.
  5. Spoken like someone who has never read the WSJ. Great, straight down the line reporting (just like the Times), better cultural and sports coverage now that Murdoch owns the papers. The editorial page is slightly right of center -- just as it's been for the 40 years I've been reading it. That had nothing to do with Murdoch. Heck, but just keep to your pre-conceived notions.
  6. Absolutely. Please do. Although be aware, color is a really individual choice! But I've been playing with the settings for around 10 days so I hope I have some good pointers! Enjoy!
  7. I get why they did that. Less competition. But it was dumb.
  8. Matt Damon gives one of the best performances of the year (along with Michael B. Jordan, Michael Caine, Tom Courtenay, and Eddie Redmayne) in this Ridley Scott film. Some are put off thinking it's about Martians but the Martian is actually Matt Damon's character. I thought it was a beautiful film filled with great performances (from Chastain, Daniel, Ejiofor, Bean, even Sebastian Stan who I didn't recognize at first) with a first rate script and stunning photography. I loved every minute of it.
  9. These days, 95% of what's on Turner Classic Movies is available for free on the internet, youtube, torrent sites. etc. As for MSNBC (or Fox or CNN), I'd rather have sex with an ugly woman that spending two seconds watching that kind of drivel. That's what I have the WSJ and the NYTimes for.
  10. You can't go wrong with the M series from Vizio. Ultra 4K is just amazing when you play a blu ray and it upscales regular DVD stuff as well. I wish I had bought the large one last year when I upgraded my screening room TV but I had no idea it could be that good. Go for it!
  11. Vizio, for the price point, is really worth it. Almost 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of Samsung. Since the technology is so new I wouldn't spring for the more expensive high end stuff until the dust settles in 3-4 years. Look up the reviews for the Vizio M series. Excellent.
  12. I could never do THAT. There's just way too much good stuff on TV, both UK and USA. Much more interesting that what is in the cinema or in books (by far).
  13. I've been doing it for 5 plus years. Not. One. Single. Problem. Ever.
  14. Earlier this year I bought a new Samsung 60" HDTV for my screening room after my old 52" crapped out. I have a 40" Samsung HDTV in my den. I was pleased with my new purchase until .... I rented a house for Thanksgiving and they had a 50" Vizio 4K UltraHD. I was blown away. We watched ALL ABOUT EVE and THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and I felt that Bette Davis and Anthony Hopkins were in my living room. So I replaced my den TV with a Vizio 50" 4K UltraHD. I love it. I will say it takes a TON of tweaking when you get it out of the box. If you just turn it on and watch cable you will be DISAPPOINTED. There are lots of tips about settings online but you really also need to buy a blu ray calibration disc which will take you step by step on how to get the color to your liking and what settings to touch and which ones not to touch. I also have surround sound in my screening room which I love but bought a great sound bar for the den TV. Whatever you do, don't rely on the TV sound system. They suck. As for torrents and file sharing ... I'd just join one of the groups like tehparadox.com or bolt.cd .. you will find a wealth of material there. For most people file sharing is the way to go instead of torrents as it's both easier and no risk. You don't have to buy a VPN or any of that. You'll want to join one of the providers with premium accounts to make downloading faster and easier. I'm happy to answer any questions about this. Cheers!
  15. I have no idea what a "torrent training video" is!
  16. Torrent! Private file sharing sites! It's 2016!
  17. I download everything -- either by torrent or private file sharing sites -- I get things quicker, without commercials, in better quality. The only thing I don't get by having gotten rid of cable/satellite is news and sports but that's changing to so I don't miss it. Plus I can piggy back off my neighbors in the country and their satellite. In NYC, in my building, you have have no choice but to have it because it's built into your assessment. I'm happy to be rid of the cable cord and I save a ton of money.
  18. I love the conflation of "conservative and WASPY." I haven't met a WASP in 30 years who wasn't very liberal/left wing.
  19. I completely agree with you on that. Perhaps I misunderstood the original comment which I took to be more "sexual" in nature. Those kinds of generic questions should be answered the same way, gay or straight, IMHO.
  20. I have no doubt that you are correct but I still would find that kind of talk in a professional setting inappropriate. If I did that at my university, I'd be brought up on charges. Of course, college settings are VERY TOUCHY these days.
  21. I have no problem with the first exchange. I think the second exchange would be inappropriate in an office setting or any professional setting.
  22. That's awfully tepid. I wouldn't call that being "open about your sexual orientation." I got from the original comment that we were talking about actual sexual comments which I would find inappropriate in a workplace.
  23. Ann Blyth is one of the loveliest women to walk this earth. As for Joan, she must have had something. Gable had her for years.
  24. I find this post absolutely disgusting. There is absolutely no evidence whatsoever that Dennis Hastert is or was a serial rapist of any kind. There is not evidence of him involved in any wrongdoing concerning boys or girls or animals for that matter. To make that kind of accusation without any evidence is truly disgusting. I hope when someone makes it against you based on the same information that you find yourself being defended. As a legal scholar at my school said, "Dennis Hastert was convicted of withdrawing his own money from his own bank account and that should give everyone pause."
  25. I expect, at some point, that almost everyone associated with GLEE will be arrested for something or other. That was one fairly creepy group of people especially Ryan Murphy.
