I didn't get spanked as a kid but I had a friend whose parents spanked him for any misbehavior well into his teens. I was deeply closeted and in fevered denial of my gayness as a young man. Married with kids and pretending I was happy. But it probably did save my life, since I didn't do the anonymous, promiscuous thing. My wife and I had gay friends who died so young. One of my sons' godfathers died at 26. This essay hit me hard. Since I became a widower and single father I've been more honest and I am sometimes wistful about having been so inhibited when I was young. But again, that may have saved me. So I try to live in the here and now. As both a dad and (I think) a DILF. But I never want to forget those we lost.
