The numbers are out there for anyone to form an opinion.
Although you can count more strictly only the cases where it is clear the infected person did have sufficient adherence/drug levels in the relevant body tissues (there are 2 or 3 cases like this) or you can count also the cases where the person _claims_ to have been adhering perfectly to PrEP, but it's has not been clinically confirmed (I think there are just under 20 cases like that, which include the previously mentioned ones), if you put these numbers in relation to around 1 million people using PrEP over a period of more than 10 years, at least to me it's pretty clear that the risk is miniscule, not to say neglectable.
A million people using PrEP for over ten years and at most 2 per year ending up with what is a perfectly treatable condition. I can live with that. If you can't that's really up to you. But comparing the above statistics with Russian Roulette is simply ridiculous  as that roulette entails a one in six chance of dying on the spot. I am confident most readers of this post will understand the difference.

First thing to realise is that there are two types of hammams in Marrakech. The ones for tourists and the ones for ordinary citizens. These are _entirely_ different. The tourist version will have signs, advertising, they will give a commission to your hotel or tour guide, if they sent you there, it's big business in Marrakech and you will pay anything between 25 to 100 usd depending on what treatments you want (massages, peeling, pedicure, hair removal, etc) or more if you order refreshments or even a meal. Most places will have a fixed price for entrance, scrubbing and massage and you can't opt out (I guess you can pay, but say no thanks to the massage, but in that case why are you there?). These places vary greatly in quality,  decoration, etc, so do your research. This is what people refer to when they say they have been to an authentic Moroccan hammam. They can be absolutely wonderful, some of them are very boutique, but all the other guests will be tourists like you, staff will speak some English, there's no nudity, and it's nothing like the hammams where ordinary people go. I went to one of these and an older male masseur selected me (they picked the clients, not the other way around). After the scrubbing (gommage in French) he took me to an isolated room upstairs, while the other clients were having their massage in a shared room downstairs. He worked my legs and buttocks _a lot_ and entirely focused on that. His fingers touched my anus repeatedly and I was really curious to see how far he would go. I never actually instructed him to go further though, so it ebbed out. Afterwards he asked me for a tip, even as there was gigantic signs everywhere saying tipping was forbidden. I'm still not quite sure what that was about, I would call myself very straight-acting and on the other hand I have a great ass for someone 50+. So was he "into me" or just wanted to get paid for a happy ending? No idea.
It took me quite a while to find a real hammam, mostly because no locals will tell you where they are. I speak fluent French, so that's not the issue. The real hamams are really very private, people use them as their own bathrooms, they can be rather small, and they are also not very hygienic by Western standards. People will be shaving, even their pits or pubic hair (common in Arab countries), they will cut their toe nails, etc. They often don't have signs, and are in small back streets, entrance may be from the yard, etc, so unless you already know it, you won't find it. Nobody speaks a word of English and only very little French. Entrance is 2/3 usd or similar. You bring your own soap and what else you need to clean yourself. The only thing they provide is a bucket, that you need to get water from the taps, that you then pour over yourself in the steam room. There are often no lockers for clothes and valuables, so you give them to a guy who will watch them. The toilets will not have paper (common in Arab countries) and the doors often won't have a lock (I'm assuming it's too stop people from having sex in there). There will be a masseur or two, price would be around 10 usd, but most people don't go there for that. They go to scrub themselves and do that very passionately, many of them probably don't have a proper bathroom at home. They sit around the steam room relaxing, some of them for what seems like hours. And here's the beauty of it, they scrub each other, they scrub you. You don't even have to ask for it or communicate by words, someone will just come up to you and start scrubbing and you're expected to do the same in return. There's often a dense homoerotic atmosphere but not because the men are necessarily gay (some might be, of course). There's very little talking, if any.
I absolutely love these places, they are primitive but so sensual. Some of them do have a bit of a gay clientele and some action,  mutual masturbation etc, nothing advanced, as there is nowhere private. Great place to meet local guys and go home with them after though. God bless you, if you can find one of these places. Only local gay men would know which ones of them have some action, and they may not even want to share that info, it's clandestine and people want it to stay that way. But it's paradise in my book.

nopelo got a reaction from BSR in Ghana?
Hello, lots of things can happen even in this type of country. I know the region, but not specifically Ghana.
The apps will work, Grindr will be the biggest one, and also Gayromeo/Romeo.com. It's a web site and an app based in Germany. It's popular in Africa because there's a website, so easy to use on a computer and people may not have a smart phone or access to mobile Internet (low coverage in your neighbourhood or simply no cash to buy gsm data bundles that day). In African families you can't keep your phone to yourself, if your sister or cousin wants to watch a film that you have downloaded, you simply lend it to them, so you would have to delete a lot of apps after using them, to stay under cover.
Romeo is also interesting because they have a section called hunqz, which is adds from escorts. You can only access that on the website, not on the app. This is the place to look for escorts.
I know around 20 African countries, so I hope it's ok if I give you some advice:
It is not uncommon for criminals to target gay people, so be very careful. Honey traps and so on, fake profiles and a couple of guys show up and rob you. Blackmail is also common, threatening to report you to the police (in case being gay is illegal, for example). Filming you when you have sex, threatening to publish that on social media, etc etc. Escorts can also be criminals and rob or blackmail you.
Almost everyone shows fake pics in the profile. It's accepted practice, so nothing to get upset about. It's simply not safe to show photos of yourself in most African countries, and everyone knows that (except a tourist who just arrived), so it's not like they are actually impersonating. They will typically show their face on cam only. They may send authentic body pics. Many guys will exaggerate their height, dick size and other data in a way that goes far beyond other parts of the world. Be prepared to be surprised.
Before going on a date consider safety. Meeting the first time after dark, for example, is something I would avoid, unless in a restaurant or where there's people around (very few African guys will agree to that though, because if they are seen with a white and older guy it is clear to everyone that they are gay and/or prostitutes). You will need to hide valuables, etc, if you take someone to your room. Oh and very few hotels will except visitors, especially after dark. I always stay in aribnb, but check the house rules before booking, many has a rule about no visitors after dark. I would personally ask to get a photo of the guys id- card sent to me before he spends the night. I would then forward the photo to a friend and tell the guy I did that, for my safety. Most honest and intelligent African guys will actually appreciate that, it means you are serious, risk averse and not a crazy person. In countries like Nigeria, Sénégal, Kenya, South Africa I would say the id-card routine is mandatory. I think Ghana is somewhat safer.
That said there are, of course, some wonderful, kind, loving, sexy black men out there. I would recommend being picky and staying with one guy, if you like him, as opposed to chasing another and another. Less risk involved, less hassle and just like any other place he will immediately find out and probably block you. African guys are sensitive of being treated as just a piece of meat. They may also be looking marry you.
I have had the best time with my African lovers and boyfriends, but I did also get into trouble a few times, hence the warnings. Good luck!

I think it's because I just came back from Brazil and "boy" is the second most common euphemism for a male prostitute there. The most common being "garoto de programa", but I didn't think that to be widely understood. I have seen the word "boy" used that way in many forums, Spain, Portugal, US, all over really. So it was no reference to age at all.
To me an escort is a professional with an amount of class, and typically high prices, pretty faces and gymmed up bodies, often gay and frequent visitors to the hottest party events. That's the total opposite of what I look for, I like guys who are a bit more real, masculine, less cultivated and even less professional if you like, guys with a day job and maybe kids, who want some extra fun and money on the side. If they are young, that's cool, as long as they are manly, but my preference is guys 30-40 years old.

Well, that might be true if you are comparing states in the US or Europe, but I do believe that West Africans are considerably bigger than East Africans, that Cubans are more hung than the Japanese, Brazilians more equipped than Chileans, etc. Pretty much the same way that blond hair is more common in Scandinavia than in Spain.

nopelo got a reaction from + bashful in Dear clients, would you rather hire a bisexual or gay provider?
    Dear socurious,
I think the definition of gay, bi and straight will be different in different cultures and in the minds of different individuals, so there's really no way for you to get a clear/universal answer. I also sense that many of the replies above seem slightly politicised, as in lgbt politics. Nothing wrong with that, because many gay men still feel uncomfortable about being seen as second class to straight men, for obvious reasons. So why should we pay extra money for someone who is on the oppressing side of these politics and possibly also a liar? Makes total sense to me.
I come from a different place, though. First because I'm 100 percent gay myself, and I still have enjoyed sex with females and MTF trans persons a few times. There can be a joy in a sexual encounter that is not primarily about the other person's genitals or genes. Hey, back in the day, fucking a goat or a cow, was one of the more common sexual experiences for young males in the rural context (there's research proving this). When people say "a hole is a hole" it can sound quite judgy or cynical, but there is a reality to that, sociologically and historically. Think about men at war or in prison, for example. Raping a prisoner of war must be something very different from letting your cell mate, who is also your best buddy, fuck you in the ass. Not even discussing who is straight, gay or bi.
A couple of my straight friends (when I was younger and more attractive) tried to have sex with me, when we were drunk. So, anything can happen and that's ok. They are all happily married now and I don't think they ever did it with a man, as I didn't want it.
Second, I have had a few absolutely beautiful sexual experiences with guys who I would define as straight. Not for pay, it just happened. Two guys drunk and horny and one of them (me) made an advance. All these experiences were in Africa, with young men who were married, had kids and did not in any way see themselves as gay. I think it just excited them that I wanted their dick. They treated me royally, though, amazing sex. They did kiss, but not profoundly, they tried to figure out what I wanted , so that they could satisfy me. They gave all they had, but within boundaries.
So my reply is, in the end, similar to other replies above. Why lie about it? You can not give another person any other experience than what you are and what you bring. A lot of escorts don't specify if they are this or that, leaving it up to the client's imagination. Maybe you should just stay with that? Being a bit enigmatic can be sexy too.

    Truly appreciate your input!
You probably know a lot more about Cuba than I. My Spanish is elementary, but still makes all the difference if you're trying to connect with local people (or guys specifically). Or traveling around the country, using local transport etc. I have a Cuban godchild and her father, one of my best friends, has been married to a Cuban woman since 20 years back. I had info from them and could ask their advice on anything, also gay stuff like what security measures are relevant if I bring a guy home, how do I know if a guy is only after money, etc, they are modern people and very cool. We all live in Europe, just mentioning as this site seems very US oriented. So we don't have the same issues with bans, visas, etc (we have other issues).
The gay beach outside Havanna is something I recommend, it's a unique place. You will find gay for pay and any other version of paying for sex there. Gold diggers who might actually be gay (or straight) and want to marry rich, find a better life in another country. Rent boys in the bushes next to it, ostentatiously showing their big dicks and charging 10 usd to give them a blow job in the bushes. But also gay Cuban couples or mixed couples, just enjoying the beach. It's a friendly kind of place where anything goes. Lovely.
Many of the guys on the beach (not the guys in the bushes) you will also see in the clubs, meaning those three or four clubs where that kind of guys will go, looking for men who will pay for sex (my impression is that many older Cubans, who somehow can afford it, also pay).
I don't recommend the clubs, I hated them, but that is another obvious way to meet guys, weather they are full on prostitutes or just guys who want you to pay their drinks and if they're lucky a bit more. I found it impossible and nerve-wracking to understand who is what. They all wanted something (so it seemed), but was it money for sex, or just me paying for the drinks and the ride to the next club, the entrance fee, etc. It was unclear to me, and I was extremely uncomfortable because of not understanding.
Talked to some hot guys for sure, but when you have said the line that every Cuban will teach you "I don't pay" in order to avoid prostitutes, and they still hang around expecting you to pay for drinks etc it becomes very unclear to me. So I never went home with any guy from these clubs, not even the guys that were sooooo sexy. It was too unclear.
I'm sure you will have better luck when you visit next time, my friend. The Cuban guys are extraordinarily sexy (and hung, from what I know).

Well, Russian Roulette with a trillion blanks and only half a bullet is not Russian Roulette anymore. I think that's obvious to anyone. If you are claiming that PrEP is not an adequate and efficient way to protect yourself against HIV , you are rather alone in that assessment.

Yes, well the statistics disagree with you on that, nycman. The statistics show with no opening for interpretation that both TasP and PrEP (and condoms) are extremely efficient ways to protect yourself and others from HIV, so close to 100 percent protection that it's not relevant to assess it even as a theoretical risk.

    Hello,
Would love any info on hiring men in African countries. I can provide some general info on a few countries there, but never tried hiring, just cruising for free.
    Thanks in advance!

Thank you for this warning, but I fail to see the purpose of painting out Africa/ns as a threat when it comes to HIV. The responsibility to protect oneself lies with all of us, irrespectively of where we are born or where we travel. PrEP, TasP and condoms are options that are available to all of us (yes, even to Africans). What's the point of shaming a certain nation or continent? Barebacking without having considered the mentioned ways of protecting oneself (and as a consequence other partners) is not a responsible choice anywhere in the world. Period.

It would have been wonderful if you had cited the rationale and specifics to fully address your choice of countries.
