My thoughts on short term rentals:

- with the occupancy rate of hotels in NYC being so low, it's worth looking into getting a room for a night. Especially on weekends, when there are no business travellers. Example: Millenium Hilton used to be $400 a night, now you can get a room for $170 a night (on weekends).

- I heard the St Marks was renovated. They used to offer $60 for 2 hours.

- For a real dive, check the Senton Hotel. Rock bottom prices. Don't take your shoes off, don't touch the bed and don't touch the sink though ...

- There are some threads on this board about the Deauville Hotel. It's clean enough. Not sure they still offer short term rates though. But then, with economy being what it is, they might.

And of course, always pay cash for short term stays at dive hotels.
