Sex addiction also involves physical dependency, namely on endorphins, released in the brain during and immediately after sexual release. Endorphin release alters mood.

But hand-washing in it’s own right is not a mood-altering experience. The reduction of anxiety is mood-altering for a person afflicted with the compulsion, but not for other people. Sex, on the other hand, is mood-altering for addict and non-addict alike. An addiction is a pathological relationship to a mood-altering substance or experience.

Sex addiction is real. A sex addiction is a pathological relationship to a mood altering experience. As with alcohol or drugs, which are mood altering substances, there isn't a "cure." But 12 step programs are great for resolving the pathology. Give it a try.
