I am wondering if others here have tried the IE7 preview version 2?

I've been using it on a second computer and somewhat impressed with the streamlined interface and new features, most notably tabbed browsing. I've used Firefox and found their tab browsing to be somewhat clumsy whereas IE7 seems better integrated. Microsoft has included additional security features, not found in IE6, plus included more viewing real estate than previous versions of IE.

If you want to take a look at it visit http://microsoft.com/ie

If you're using it I would like to read your impressions.

I would also be interested in how others view this new version of IE. I am tempted to try it (I have been using Windows Live Mail Beta and like it very much). However, the following disclaimer appears on the MS website:

Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview will only run on Windows® XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) systems, but will ultimately be available for Windows Vista, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, and Windows Server 2003.

Since I am running 'Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2' I’m not sure if the new version will be compatible with my operating system. It probably would, but any info would be appreciated.

Internet Explorer 7 will be supported on Windows XP Pro with SP 2, so you shouldn't have any trouble running the betas or the final version.

Those users on Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows 2000 will have to upgrade if they want to use IE7.

XP Pro will be supported.

But always be wary of installing beta software on the machine you use every day. It's BETA which means there are no guarantees. If it trashes something you rely on, tough noogies.

I tried beta 1 and was impressed. Don't have a test machine I can try beta 2 on at the moment, and there's no way in hell I'll install a beta on the machine I use every day.

I suspect IE7 will be a popular upgrade, but wait for the final version unless you have test machines to install it on.

Hoover & Deej!

Thanks guys for the advice... With the Beta 'Windows Live Mail' you could easily opt out and it affected nothing critical... I'll let others do the legwork on this one! Though from the way things are described this new version of IE looks interesting if nothing else.

If you like please elaborate on Windows Live Mail. I'm not aware of it and the program sounds of interest.

Windows Live Mail Beta is a work in progress. It is the Hotmail of the future. I was selected to give it a test run a couple of months ago and it has been evolving and improving on a regular basis. The best feature concerns the fact that when you compose a message it is very similar to MS Word… For example if you misspell a word it is underlined in red and can be corrected in the same manner as Word.

At present there is no thesaurus feature or dictionary as with the old Hotmail, but I suspect they will be added. You can delete your junk mail more easily. Simply locate the down arrow on your junk e-mail folder and click to delete everything in it. You clear out your deleted items folder the same way. It is also really easy to find a contact. You simply start typing a name in the “Find in contacts” field, and a list of possible names immediately pops up. Then, just choose a name from this list. You an also change the colors and the appearance and there is a drag and drop feature to move messages from one folder to another. In addition, to delete a message you simply right click and easily delete as usual or you can reply to a message with the same actions. Also when you first log on you can choose to view your most recent message or have it hidden… Sent messages are also automatically saved for 30 days. You get 2GB worth of storage as well. You need IE 6.0 or above and can easily opt out at any time.

Well these are just some of the features.

How to get it? I assume I was selected at random because I used Hotmail on a regular basis. I would try

http://join.msn.com/betamail

and see if you are given the option to try Windows Live Mail… it probably will get you to the old version of Hotmail. I have mentioned this to others as well but am not sure if they were successful at signing up… Good Luck!

Just FWIW, I have a Virtual PC set up running Windows Server 2003 and it won't install the IE7 public beta. Says it's an unsupported OS. So they clearly haven't got the installer finished. :-(
