The Academy Awards date is March 5. Mark it down to watch a milestone in film history.

If "Capote" wins, we still win. But I believe that "Brokeback" has enough momentum to win top honors. The question is whether the Academy will have the courage to vote for it in the leading categories - Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Academy follows the Globes' lead: best picture to Brokeback, actor to Philip Seymour Hoffman. As you say, we win either way.

Brokeback

I too am glad that Jake was nominated, though he was certainly more than "supporting." But this gives both Heath and Jake a chance to be recognized and rewarded.

Watch out for "Crash," which yesterday won the SAG award. It may be a dark horse. Strong enough film. Voting for it gives homophobes an out -- and they can wrap themselves in the film's sentiments. Oscar likes to be noble.* That could cut either way this year.

*e.g. "Gentlemen's Agreement," and, especially, "Ghandi," an uninspired film that beat out "ET," one of the greatest films of all time.

I know the topic at hand is about Brokeback Mountain and it's chances for this years Oscars. What I want to do is respond to the comment about " ET " and " Gandhi ". For myself, ET is a great wholesome film, but to say " Gandhi " is uninspired, well I disagree. What Sir RIchard Attenborough put on film was an epic of a motion picture that ironically won eight academy awards. What Ben Kinglsey did was portray Gandhi to masterful perfection. Incidentally this guy is one of the greatest English film actors of the last thirty odd years and he will forever be remembered more for " Gandhi " than any other film thus far within his illustrious career, both on stage and film. For me, " Gandhi " is one of the greatest films of the latter half of the 20th century and it by far outshines " ET ". I'd venture to say that " Close Encounters Of The Third Kind " is a must better made film than " ET ".

Since the film " Crash " has been mentioned. I was a bit suprised that Don Cheadle never got an Oscar nod for " Best Actor ". On the other hand it's somwhat nice to see Terrance Howard receive some recognition for his portrayal in the film " Hustle & Flow ".

Gandhi

I second and totally agree with all Ro comments about the movie Gandhi. Gandhi holds up very well and ET is a fun movie, but no comparison to the emotions and life of a saint. I saw Gandhi for the first time with an Indian audience at a movie theatre in Mumbai (then called Bombay). The audience was very emotional and apparently the movie was preceived as being true to the story and their culture and history.

I think we in S.A.G. gave CRASH the ensemble vote for sheer size of the cast (some 70 odd strong). The cast uniformly gave performances worthy of note (unusual for a cast that large).

As much as I loved BBM and would love to see a gay themed picture winn the best picture Oscar - I truly think Crash was a better movie, not that it will win, but it should be a contender.
