LOS ANGELES (AP) - The most lauded movie of 2005 added another honor to its list Saturday. Ang Lee was named filmmaker of the year by his peers, winning the Directors Guild of America award for the epic romance "Brokeback Mountain."

"Ang Lee is fierce in his timidity, his humbleness and his respect for everyone around him," Gyllenhaal said as he presented the diminutive director with a medallion in honor of his nomination. "He's frustrating and so damn wise."

Ledger was equally generous with praise, thanking Lee for "introducing us to these delicate characters."

"It took a delicate man to tell this story, and that's you," Ledger said.

"I don't know about you," Lee said with a laugh, "but that feels a little gay to me."

Keep 'em coming. The more people who see this film the better.

I caught the four stars on Oprah and enjoyed the show, especially after reading Diana Ossana's letter in the Advocate (thanks to this MC). I thought Oprah asked all the right questions and it was very interesting to see the cast member's faces as they reacted to those questions.

It was clear to me that Heath and Jake are no homophobes, and neither are Anne Hathaway and Michelle Williams. But you could also see their judicious fear in discussing the subject of gay men in a very public forum. Frankly, I don't need to hear any actor's opinion on much, so I'm fine with that.

My son thought the Oprah show was too much fluff and little substance. I reminded him that Oprah is not Charlie Rose; when it comes to Oprah, 60% has to be ABOUT Oprah. I think she's earned her throne so I don't have any problem with that either.

I'm glad that Ang Lee is getting well deserved praise for "Brokeback Mountain" but have been surprised there has been little or no mention in the press of an earlier film "The Wedding Banquet". He directed it in 1993 and it also deals with a gay relationship. It's a sweet and funny film so you don't have to cry at the end of this one.
