Went to New Orleans this past weekend. It is still hurting badly. The French Quarter has people hanging out but many venues are not fully operational. Hotels rooms are scarce. Dined at Galetoires, which is one of the cites most well known restaurants. It was pathetic. Poor service and mediocre food. The buss boys appeared to have been pulled in from the streets. Every establishment complains about the scarcity of people to work. 70% of those in the Quarter were FEMA or construction workers and take most of the hotel rooms. The bars (not Gay) are open but charging outrageous prices for drinks. Most places close about 12 AM.

It was noticeable that, contrary to news reports, African-Americans are indeed returning to the Big Easy. Unfortunately, it also appears that New Orleans will be many years in returning to its former glory.

All of this makes me sad. I've had so many great times there.
