The Royal opera House have just announced their 2018-2019 season. Apart from the earlier announced Ring (already sold out) the hottest show of the season will surely be ''La Forza del Destino" featuring Anna Netrebko, Jonas Kaufman, Ludovic Tezier and Ferruccio Furlanetto. What a cast! Ms Netrebko is currently singing Lady Macbeth at the Garden and has received rave reviews, spectacularly justifying her choice of repertoire. Google ''Macbeth'' at Covent Garden and read them for yourself.

I look forward to this production. With this cast and Pappano conducting, (if no one cancels) it is certain to end up being telecast in theaters around the world and eventually being issued on Blu-Ray. Hopefully, though it is probably a vain wish, the actual stage production will not be "updated" and/or strait-jacketed into some idiotic "concept" by Christof Loy (the announced director.) Don Alvaro is one of Kaufmann's most fully realized portrayals (from multiple viewings of his performance in Munich back in 2013) and Netrebko should find Leonora a perfect fit as she continues to perfect her more spinto Verdian line.

I have been re reading some of the reviews of Ms Netrebko in ''Macbeth'' and this quote from the ''Spectator'' review neatly encapsulates the consensus:

''Netrebeko gave one of the most stunning vocal performances heard in this theatre for many years. Her voice is now enormous but miraculously retains its flexibility and range of colour. It is completely at her command, absolutely steady, and deployed with rare dramatic intelligence. Verdi would have been disarmed.''

High praise indeed.
