variety.com: Christopher Nolan to Present ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ at Cannes

For the first time since the original release, this 70mm print was struck from new printing elements made from the original camera negative. Nolan worked closely with the team at Warner Bros. Pictures throughout the mastering process.

I will admit, I didn't like it back then, but came to love it later. The AFI owns one of the original 70mm prints so they show it every couple of years and I always make an effort to go see it. That print is not too bad, but I want to see the difference.

I also liked Steven Soderbergh's fanedit, he took out most of HAL's breakdown and it's a totally different film, amazing in its own way, I wonder if that variation occurred to Kubrick and Clarke when making it.

I haven't seen Soderburgh's edit but in reading the book and from what my memory says,

HAL9000's breakdown is crucial to the story, with a post-mortem in the sequel 2010 being integral to that plot also.
