I ordinarily do not like fantasy movies. Guillermo del Toro's latest writing/direction/producer masterpiece is the exception. On the surface it retells in modern context Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (the book not the movie) of the treatment of the unknown. What makes this later opus so significant is that it is set in the early 1960's. We see racism, homophobia, and sexual harassment in the context of what happened in the "good ol' days". What's amazing is how relevant the depiction is in the days of the Trump White House.

I loved Pan's Labyrinth, but I did not love this movie. I only liked it. It is a love story, so in that sense it is beautiful, but I did not find the film beautiful. It's dark, dank, and wet. Not my idea of beauty.

Just watched this movie last night. I usually give arty movies some breaks, but I did not like this one at all. It felt too balanced, 50% fantasy and 50% reality when it should have been 30/70 or 70/30.
