Japanese police have cornered an unlikely suspect in the attempted murder of a bedridden woman.

According to the Agence France-Presse, police believe a stray cat is responsible for leaving Mayuko Matsumoto bloodied in her home in a mountainous southern region of the country.

She was discovered by her daughter on Monday with about 20 cuts on her face.

Police have launched an attempted murder investigation after assessing the wounds, local outlet RKK reported. Some of the injuries are said to have been severe.

"When we found her, blood covered everything above her chin. Her face was soaked in blood. I didn't know what happened," Matsumoto's daughter told the outlet.

Her 82-year-old mother is reportedly unable to speak.

Kyodo News reported that following the attack, she was forced to receive emergency care.

Private network NTV reported that authorities saw no signs of humans entering the home.

After examining the scene, as well as Matsumoto's wounds, they determined that cats may be to blame.

Police told the Nishinippon Shimbun newspaper, police took a closer look at a few stray cats spotted prowling around Matsumoto's home.

NHK, a national broadcaster, revealed that police are now analyzing a blood sample from the claw of one particular stray, believed to be the culprit.
