The movie will be in wide release soon with Oscar buzz. It looks beautiful and nice to see a film without the typical gay stereotypes. Coming off last years gay themed "Moonlight," Will there be an anti gay backlash from the public?

A movie doesnt need to punch you in the face to make an impact. This looks subtle and nuanced which often paints a more beautiful picture.

I saw one review call it "safe" which might align with being nuanced versus a punch. Sometimes less is more. People seem to love the movie. Looking forward to it.

That's because "hetero" critics seem to believe if it's GAY themed it has to be about WILD sex, and men going crazy with each other like animals. It cant be loving, tender or romantic. That's reserved for THEM....

I think you may be missing the point. Last year "Moonlight" won best picture. That movie had gay subject matter. If this movie does well on Oscar night that would be two years in a row. The movies individual impact would be secondary. I'm not sure that hetero critics have ever described a mainstream gay themed movie as "wild sex."

The younger lead is supposed to be 17. I think that's where the issue will be. While it's over the age of consent in Italy, I frankly would have made the character 18 for the movie just to sidestep the issue that in a number of US states it would be statutory rape. Especially since Armie Hammer looks considerably older than 24, which his character is supposed to be.

It's not the description, its the "perception". If Moonlight had been about white protagonists, I dont believe it would have been embraced the way it was. Hollywood was trying to show they are "liberal" and in tune with the Black Lives Matter movement. That's why they call it "SHOW BUSINESS".....

Their ages shouldn't be an issue, but some might want to make it so.

The Summer of '42 was a story about a 15 year old boy that was based on the experience of a 14 year old boy and a grown woman. That is way more dicey then a 17 year old boy closing in on his sexual peak at 18.

But yeah, a lot of people will want to deny Elio his worship of Oliver, turn it all around, and try to spread their layer of filth over a beautiful story.

I hope it's as good if not better than the book. Could not put the book down and left me with a sad warm poignant and just emotional feeling afterwards.

That movie came out in the 70s when a lot of stuff that wouldn't fly today was making it onto the screen.

Not to derail the thread but I think this sells the movie short. As it happened, Washington DC was one of the cities Moonlight played during the limited release before it opened wide. So I went to see it before there was any mainstream buzz and I actually don't follow the festival circuit news, so my only exposure to it was exactly one promo trailer. I decided I had to go see what looked to be a quality gay film because I assumed it was going to come and go and then vanish with maybe a DVD release much later. I was totally blown away by the film and afterwards came home and was pleasantly surprised to find it in iTunes so I preordered it because it was available in HD and lot of small films don't get released on BluRay, only DVD, and I am a bit of an HD snob.

So maybe, just maybe, it was embraced for its artistic merit?

I know it's a serious subject, I just want to joke about how some straight folks think of gay sex.

Back to the movie... is like a gay version of "Lolita"

Moonlight was so well done and IMO the audience was hungry for that kind of honest portrayal of the sexuality of black men, though we already had Omar on the Wire (which several of us agree is the best TV show evah!). Until The Wire gay black men were shut out unless they were clownish. So people were ready for Moonlight. I was.

I can't argue that the Oscars might pass on Call Me by Your Name, because its the Oscars. They whiffed it on Brokeback Mountain. One might not be surprised that some voters will rule out voting on a flick with gay content a second year running.

I doubt if Sony would have picked up this movie if it wasn't "safe". Gay sex still scares many, so the juiciest parts from the book are likely not there. The book gets a little hot. Elio even bones a chick. Sony probably believes this is a movie that women will see in droves and many will drag their husbands and boyfriends along. They have a strategy for mainstream audiences and skipped all the gay festivals.

As far as Elio being 17, I remember being in high school and having a young teacher that was so dreamy. Just imagine being in the same situation, but in Italy, in the summer, at your parents villa. Nuff said. I wish folks would cease questioning Elio's age. Oliver was very careful with Elio. At least he was in the book.
