Going solo and staying in the downtown/Fremont area. Any good places to shop and play blackjack for the first time?

Blackjack... Hit a local's casino. Terribles, Gold Coast, Sunset Station, Sam's Town. Lower table minimums, friendlier dealers, less mechanical atmosphere and much better comps, if you're going for that.

 

As you're in the downtown area, make sure to hit up Don't Tell Mama one night. Strong drinks, strong talent:

I will actually be in Vegas the same time and I normally stay in the downtown area but this time will be staying at other hotels but will probably be visiting downtown to make my normal "donations" at the tables and slots.

 

The California Hotel, Main Street Station, Fremont Hotel, Four Queens is normally where I play/"donate" at the tables and slots. I'm no pro and don't play big so these casinos are normally more friendly and easy going than the strip.

 

If you are looking for shopping, you have the normal touristy shops under the Fremont Street Experience. You also have outlet shopping in downtown as well as near to the airport.
