written by the legendary Jimmy Webb, many think the song refers to a place in Kansas...it's really about Wichita County, Oklahoma......

 

in addition to that great line above, I always thought this one in the song was exceedingly clever:

 

I know I need a small vacation

But it don't look like rain

This has to be the one song that everybody heard while stuck in a traffic jam back in '68-69. At least this vintage Houston scene had telephone lines visible in the distance.

 

 

No telephone lines in crowded LA... but everybody still needed a small vacation.
