I'm not sure I'm convinced of the robustness of that data. Were we really that much more fertile back when DDT and other stuff was all legal?

Also. the median age of the population has climbed dramatically in that time period. That alone would lead us to expect a significant drop.

Wouldn't it be funny if it turned out the drop is real and the reason is all the stuff we make pregnant women do now - no drinking, no smoking, no cold cuts, no this, less fish, etc. - in combination are actually having a negative effect.

My mother drank and smoked her way through six pregnancies and everyone was fine. Today pregnant women are bombarded with massive list of do's and don'ts, pumped up with megavtiamins, etc. That's got to be severely stressful.

Also - the study talks about volume as well...is it possible people are ejaculating smaller loads because they are ejaculating much more frequently?

e.g. masturbation is pretty much totally acceptable at this point. 40 years ago a lot of people were a lot more under the thumb of religious dogma and probably felt guiltier about it so did it less.

Volume of sperm -or sperm count - is not volume of ejaculate. (Perhaps I missed a study outcome about volume of ejaculate)

One of the reasons this article caught my attention... I have some career experience in the fertility industry.

There are some fascinating ethical issues arising from the industry and technology. For example, its possible take a sample from a man with very low sperm count and low motility, grab a sperm, and inject it directly into an egg. Its even possible to extract sperm from the testes.

Sounds great, helps people create the families they desire. Then one day, an embryologist and I are chatting, and while she also thinks its great, she points out "one of the things we dont know: are we actually contributing to future problems? Will males born from these procedures, from fathers with low counts and motility, grow up to have fertility challenges themselves? "

While I draw no cause and effect link between that experience and the article, the article prompted the memory.

But the decline in total sperm COUNT was greater than the decline in sperm concentration. That suggests that the volume of ejaculate was in fact lower. Which would go to my question that it could be that people are simply "drained" more regularly.

They already tell people trying to conceive you have better odds having sex every other day than every day, and not masturbating in between.

There's also the fact more people wore boxers back in the day and less form-fitting underwear.
