Is straight acting for a gay character acting normal?

And the fact that Hudson and Chamberlain were considered convincing when their gayness was not known demonstrates that any reluctance to cast out gay men as straight romantic leads is pandering to something that may not exist and if it does, it's purely a result of stereotyping and prejudice.

 

Actually Rock Hudson's sexuality was widely known when I started college in Boston in 1961-1962. I hated the guy in our car pool who told me first. But I was aware of his connections with Lee Strasberg and Strasberg' s family. The one thing that did surprise him and me was Marilyn Monroe's death in the summer of 1962 And I believe Monroe's will was very good to the Strasbergs.

The guy's choice of words was poor, but I think his heart was in the right place.

 

Speaking of openly gay men playing straight romantic leads, Neil Patrick Harris played a womanizer on How I Met Your Mother and audiences seemed to believe him in that role. He's managed to simultaneously play Hedwig and Barney Stinson, so I thought it only right to mention his name here.
