So I am in the market for a new phone and am considering getting one of them there fancy palm phones. Ya know the kind that you can surf the internet, check emails and all that stuff. But I was wondering if they are better or about the same as a laptop as far as quality goes. My provider is Sprint and they have two that I am considering. The first being the Treo 650 and the other PPC-6600. I am in the process of planning about 4 trips from July to November and need something all in one pretty much so I am not hauling a bunch of stuff. Heck it takes one big carry on to carry just some of my shoes when I travel. Any help on this would be GRRRRRRRRRRRREAT!

If you're "On the road" and invited to the best party in town, it probably doesn't matter what the fuck you wear.

:-)

But if it does, I'm sure your host will ensure you have what you need.

Don't buy a "smart phone" as a laptop replacement. They're certainly not that. Yes, many let you surf the net but few websites have alternate presentations for the MUCH smaller screen. It can be an exercise in frustration.

Even checking email is frustrating when your email provider doesn't scale the screen to your new device.

I think the current generation of smart phones needs to mature a bit.

If you want to cut down on luggage bulk, get a tablet PC. They're smaller, lighter PC's than most notebooks yet still fully functional PC's.

What is a tablet pc? As for email I use yahoo so I couldn't see any troubles checking emails on it and reading news and doing my thing here or on the Madonna message board that I go to. Sprint allows a 14 day trial of their products so if I don't like it or what not I am not out the money for the product.

Tablet PC's are a fairly hot new entry in the marketplace. It's a full-blown (Windows) PC that includes handwriting recognition (and some voice recognition).

They tend to be thinner than a standard notebook, often don't include keyboards (which is where the handwriting recognition comes in). It's sort of hand-held computing but with a full computer instead of a phone.

See http://www.motioncomputing.com/ or http://www.averatec.com/ for some examples. Compaq and Toshiba have tablets as well, and at least one maker (Dell?) has announced that ALL of their next generation notebooks will be tablets.

Show up shirtless, wearing your sluttyist torn jeans and barefoot. You'll be welcomed with open arms!

Deej is right - don't buy a smartphone as a replacement for a laptop. However, for overnighters or short trips, a smartphone is extrememly convenient. No need to pull it out at the airport, lugging around extra adapters, etc. And you still need some sort of internet connection.

That said, I just bought the Verizon Treo 650 and love it! The dial pad is the glass screen so it isn't easy to "touch type" the phone number. Other than that, the ability to pull up email and browse the web (albeit slowly) ANYWHERE is great.

I was actually leaning towards the 650. I have a few friends that have it and for simple quick things they have no complaints. Light weight, easy to use, eas to carry around they love it. Heard that there are some new ones on the horizon that can handle faster speeds later this year.
