Back in the day, 976 numbers were all the late-night rage. There weren't automatic masturbators commonly available, but I'm sure today some company has a model in the shape of an old cordless phone :p.

 

And the 550's which were usually local hookup/chat lines, not nearly as expensive as the 976's. I stuck to the 550's mostly. But of course they were all designed to cost you much more money than you ever thought you'd owe - it was easy to spend much more time on those lines than you thought. :eek::eek::eek::eek:

 

I remember that some of the 550's were party lines, where you'd enter into a chatroom of sorts with everyone calling in - and if you wanted to "go private" with another caller you had to both contact the moderator who put you into a private conversation away from the group. Other 550's were designed to be direct random 1-0n-1 conversations - I guess you just got hooked up with the next guy to call in. And some were set up so that you'd record a short message describing who you were and what you were looking for - and we'd all hear each other's messages in a queue, and you could choose to talk to a caller one-on-one if you liked their message. (In fact, the Manhunt internet site started off as a phone system much like that.)

 

Most of these had free versions (or free promo codes) that let you use some of the features, or restricted your time, etc. You still had to pay for full use of the system. I guess not much has changed there in terms of many of the internet sites, lol.

 

The party/group lines could be very strange in dynamic. Bits of 2-way conversations trying to happen, sometimes a true group conversation - and always, the ubiquitous questions going on as callers tried to get the attention of potential partners ("Any tops out there?" "Anyone into watersports out there?" Any guys from the North Shore?" etc). But - for its time, it was a big deal. If you didn't want to do the bars, and didn't have the patience for personal ads - this was, for its time, a new and immediate way to meet or talk to guys.

 

For those of you young'ens lol, this started in the mid-1980s and lasted pretty much through the end of the century, until the internet really took over. I was in college when it all started up - by the time I had graduated in '86, it was a booming business.

Speaking of which, internet slang has taught me some new things as well lol. Going on Craigslist the other night, I saw an ad heading that said something about a "ghole." I thought - what the hell is that? Is a ghole like a gay ghoul, or something? Something you'd dress up as for a gay halloween party lol? Wow what memories. Back in the days I would call in, hear the voice, select another one, but got off very much soo. I knew I wasn't talking with a 6 foot blond guy with 7 inch dick, but he had anice voice, got me hard and that was OK
