Hi, first I'm new here and wanted to say thanks for the great forum.

Can someone explain the reasons behind the Backpage fakes that advertise in multiple cities at once? Seems like it's always young white college age guys. Can't figure out if it's law enforcement or something else.

You don't say what part of the country you're in which prolly makes a big diff re: BP, but HERE in NYC if you snapped a screencap of the BP ads it'd be hard to tell the diff between that and a screencap of a page from"Write A Inmate". Here my advice is avoid avoid avoid. (used 2b better, you could find those hidden gems those starving students in college here who need funds and are testing the waters but aren't pros who'd put themselves on RentBoy etc, but NOW the NYC pages are mostly guys with less than honest motives to put it kindly. *I'm talking about the ones who appear ONLY on BP or other cheap sites, not ones who you can't also find on RM or M4R etc.

It's cheaper. There's no accountability, no real review process. It's much more anonymous feeling than the professional sites. It's designed to seem like CL, providing a quick experience. It's a great place to get ripped off, IMO. I've never had any good look there, though some have had success.

I'm in Dallas. Most of the Backpage folks I usually wouldn't be interested in but every couple weeks or so a hot guy appears with usually some line about just visiting. Sometimes I'll use Tineye to see if they're lying but this latest one used the exact same text in his ad header so a simple Google search found him "visiting" ten different cities. Just can't figure out what they hope to gain if they're not really in your town...

I don't have any positive thoughts about backpage, overall. But I'm so pleased to hear someone reverse image searching before they contact. Seems like that would solve so many hassles that potential clients go through.

If you're using chrome, you often don't even need TinEye. You can just right click and "search google for this image." Do it. Do it always.

What's a professional site? Is that where the advertisers use their real name (the name they use on their tax return)?

No more than you or I use our real names on this site, Mr. Looker.

I've never used BP but will relay a story as told to me by a very well respected and well thought of escort. He told me that he's had problems with a guy posting pictures of him on BP and claiming to be him. He said it's particularly troublesome when he's in a specific city and his legitimate RM ad and the fake BP ad appear during the same timeframe. What confuses people is the widely different pricing structures and other different information. His regular customers are aware of the fake BP ad but unsuspecting and new clients are confused and left to wonder what's going on.

All of this is to say....buyer beware whether it be RM or BP.

most of the NYC bp ads seem to be for massage parlors

I've only used it once here in DC. I was skeptical because the photos did not appear to all be the same person. And indeed the guy I met was not the guy in any of the photos. But he was nice enough and did a reasonable massage. Tiny penis though. Not a horrible experience but I certainly wouldn't repeat it.

If we read the archives, if we look in our memories, we have shared here pretty horrifying stories with guys from Rentmen. If we do our homework, any website is reasonable safe. I have never used BP, but we have here friends that shared wonderful discoverings there. I do use a lot Adam, another website usually put down here in the forums.

Just be cautious and you will be fine.

Ive only responded to a few SFBay BP ads - all were fakes or other warning signs.

Thinking back on my experiences, the bad ones were always from classifieds in the back of local papers. The Bay Are Reporter, the LV Bugle, an LA paper (forgotten name) etc.
