So... Why two men hugging is translated as gay lovers?

 

It's the positioning I think. One of them has his head on the other's chest. Of course who knows what comfort one would need when in their view the world was probably ending by the wrath of the gods.

The leap of faith that these men were lovers, rather than simply scared sh*tless and clinging, is less interesting than the original assumption, which figured that of course they were female rather than male. Your basic cultural sexism...
