This is why you do a couple of things when traveling in or out of the States:

 

1. Encrypt everything you travel with and never agree to an unwarranted search of your technology

2. Make sure you have a good attorney on speed dial

 

That won't help if you're not an American. They will just deny entry if you don't agree to the search.

Before I cross a border, I remove everything from my cell phone and laptop that could be incriminating. This includes "extra" google accounts and apps as well as email accounts that I use to correspond with escorts (also clean up cache and "deleted" storage). I make sure everything is backed up to cloud accounts first and leave no trace of accounts on my devices. I leave plenty of accounts and other stuff there for border officials to sift through, but it's all g-rated. Once I get to my destination, I download/reinstall what I need from my cloud backups. It seems very cloak and dagger but I've heard too many horror stories about what can happen going through immigration and customs.
