I live in the city, and there are two Zipcar parking lots within several blocks. As I dusted my windshield before leaving my garage this weekend, I wondered if it was time to sell the car and use a Zipcar for my occasional vehicular jaunts. Does anyone have experience with joining and using Zipcars? Thanks.

People who join Zipcar can reserve and rent cars by the hour or day, with insurance and gas included. Quite a variety of cars, two or three parked in many different areas to be convenient to people. My neighborhood has about 10 locations. In Boston, NYC/New Jersey, DC, and Chapel Hill. http://www.zipcar.com/

I live in NYC: I use it all the time and I love it. The only down side is that they are very popular and for weekends, you are advised to reserve in advance.

With Zipcar, you can rent by the hour -- in my area, most cars are $8.50/hr (Focus, Jetta, Civic, etc.), up to $12.50/hr for a BMW 325. Definitely convenient.

Daily rates range from $65 to $90 -- for a weekend, a rental car would probably be cheaper.

The rates include everything except tolls (gas, insurance, car wash). And you can use the parking spot of the car while you have it out. In NYC, the daily rate may be a little more expensive than car rental but the convenience of being able to pick up/return the car in your neighborhood can't be beat.
