I was riding home on the ferry tonight. (Ironically, from a fantastic session with an escort found on this site. It's fairly safe to say I wouldn't have been on this particular boat were it not for that.) I've traveled Washington State Ferries for a few years now, but tonight was the first time I'd heard this one. One of the crew came over the PA system to announce that they'd be delaying our arrival briefly as they would be coming to a full stop and sounding three blasts on the horn in remembrance of a crewmate who had recently died. I went outside in the cold under the stars as my ferry and her sister ship, headed back on the return route, came to a halt in the middle of the Sound. I'm a sucker for these, the simplest kinds of tributes. Even taking that into consideration, as they sounded their mournful blasts, I found myself tearing up to a surprising degree. I couldn't help but think some were shed for another friend I "knew" who's passed away in the last few days.

So no disrespect to the sailor in whose honor the halt was called. Many of the crew gathered astern and I'm sure a number of passengers gave him their thoughts during that brief stop. I just hope there was a little corner of the tribute to share, because at least one person on board was thinking of you, HooBoy.

Man...

What a nice post! You almost made me cry.

There is such a strange beauty in those simple hommages that I also find them totally compelling and touching.

Besides, my friend... you have a way with words... Have you thought of writting?

It's not often that we see clarity, simplicity and correctness in the same place.

Receive a tight hug, and thanks again for sharing that little moment of nostalgia.
