Simple, albeit likely stupid question: what is a "ultra speed" CD drive and how would one know if one has ones. A friend gave me a box of Imation CD-RW discs, but they read "compatible with ultra speed drives" so I assume I need to find someone else to fob them off to?

Finally, I know I asked this question before, but I wish to be more specific this time I am looking for suggestions, comments and recommendations about a DVD burner specifically to work with the Mac operating systems.

Many thanks!

How fast is your current cd burner? Unless it's really, really old, chances are it will burn fast enough to use the "ultraspeed" discs you just received. The easiest way to find out is to try it out. Probably the worst thing that would happen would be an error message from your burning program that the disc is incompatible with your burner...or you might believe that you have successfully burned a disc but it could have uncorrectable errors on it.

I don't use a Mac so I cannot give any advice about dvd burners for that platform.

Q1. I'm fairly certain that you should be able to use the CDs you have. As burners get faster, the media is sold is rated for the speed of the faster burners. They're backwards compatible--you can use them on older, slower burners.

Q2. Check out Dealmac.com. You'll find good deals on DVD burners and can be asssured if they're listed there, they're Mac compatible.

However, you can always make doubly sure by clicking on the "Forum" button on dealmac.com and posting a question about a burner you're interested in. The guys in the forum are great and are always helpful with advice about any questions you have. (Of course, they can go off on tangents, much like our own forum here!)
