Yes I can see the similarity. Good call. :) But ^^ is hotter than Mapplethorpe IMHO.

For it's day (pre-internet), the Mapplethorpe picture was shocking. These days, not so much.

I was a HUGE Mapplethrope fan in the 80's.

Nonetheless, I've always thought this was one of his worst photographs.

Like many of his works it was shocking at the time.

However unlike most of his work, it's just not technically impressive.

As one of my photography professors said at the time, "in this photo he's relying on

the shock of exposing an underground gay subculture, and not on his photography skills".

It's a pity because when has good...he was GREAT!

I can't really comment on his technique but the images of Mapplethrope that seems to stick in my mind are the nudes of black men. The unabashed, potent sexuality in the pictures still impresses. http://img.image-storage.com/2029185840/936fa8b9fe2a4.jpg

Ahhh....."Man in Polyester Suit, 1980"......always a crowd pleaser!

Again, not one of my "favorite" Mapplethorpes but it's much more technically impressive than the "Self Portrait with Whip, 1978" in my opinion.
