All of South Florida is buzzing. Last night was the International Red Cross Ball in Palm Beach, which is about 25 miles north of here. They claim that for the season (now) 25% of the wealth of the U.S. lives in Palm Beach. Two weeks ago Palm Beach society shuddered and cold-shouldered him as Donald Trump and his lovely current bride celebrated their nuptials.

Then last night was the International Red Cross Ball in Palm Beach, THE SOCIETY EVENT OF THE YEAR. They raise money for the poor, none of whom they have fortunately met; the police cordon off the entire area. The event was begun millenia ago by Marjorie Merriweather Post. For many years they have flown in 20 ambassadors from Washington, D.C. for the event to give it color. Recently Donald Trump has flown them down on his private jet, which they enjoy very much. Twenty of the most prominent families of Palm Beach each get to keep an ambassador and his wife or partner (or "diplomatic assistant" or "niece") as overnight guests for two nights. (Apparently you can get ambassadors by the bunch.) The excitement is almost too much. They had an interview with the couple who were going to host the Guatemalan ambassador and his wife. They could scarcely contain themselves; they had never had such an honor in their lives. On Sunday, after church apparently, Donald flies them back to D.C.

Ladies at the ball last night were expected to wear tiaras; when ambassadors are present, apparently you are expected to do this. The paper has been filled with accounts of the ladies of Palm Beach getting out their tiaras. One society matron of 33 complained slightly that she and her husband now went to 32 formal events per year, and she would probably have to get a second tiara just so people wouldn't think she always had to wear the same one. She was undecided on what to wear until she learned the chairwoman was going to wear red Herrerra; that decided it. She chose her white Dior.

There hasn't been this much excitement since Donald's wedding. Unfortunately it was difficult to carry on a conversation because the hissing all weekend has been so loud. Apparently Palm Beach society is riven and there has been a schism. The ball has always been held at the Breakers Hotel ballroom, but this year Donald wanted it at Mar-a-lago, his Palm Beach pied-a-terre, and that's where it was held. The previous chairwoman of the ball was rather unceremoniously ousted in a coup when she attempted to stop this. Not all the ladies of Palm Beach are happy and some of the tiaras last night were askew. Some usual ladies were not present; unfortunately they had previous engagements in Rio and Gstaad.

It is reassuring to know what 25% of the wealth in the U.S. were doing this weekend.

Now Karl. Please tell us that your well-aimed potshots reflect more than your disillusionment at being unsuccessful in finding any matrons to adopt you as their "walker" for The Season. :+

An overnight with an ambassador : One million dollars

An overnight with an escort : One thousand dollars

Watching the ambassador fuck his niece/nephew : Priceless

I grew up around West Palm, back in the days when the newspapers still had regular "society" pages. Those ladies under the tiaras were in them week-in week-out during The Season at this charity ball or that auction (see, Matt V wasn't the first one to come up with the idea). What with the overtanned skin and plastic surgery grimaces (these days over-Botoxed, I guess), not to mention the helmet hair, those gorgons scared the bejeezus out of me when I was a kid. Probably explains why a lot of drag queens still bring back bad memories.
