I thought it might be fun to start off the new year with a kind of strange Broadway double feature.

"Little Women", the musical. If you've read the book or saw the movie you pretty much know what to expect but now the ladies are doing it with song, albeit somewhat generic show tunes.

Sutton Foster ("Thoroughly Modern Millie") knocks herself out as the plucky Jo along with the wonderful Maureen McGovern as Marmee and a generally fine cast. It's a sweet and charming show and the audience was pretty enthusiastic at the end. I did have the feeling that the house was "papered" with a lot of friends of the cast so it will be interesting to see how it fares with the critics when it opens January 18th.

Sitting across the aisle from me was Sutton's very, very cute brother Hunter Foster ("Urinetown", "Little Shop of Horrors" and for a few weeks "The Producers") lending support for his sis. A talented pair these Fosters.

Also in the audience was the very gay Bruce Vilanch ("Hairspray") with a handsome young date. Go Bruce!

"Dame Edna, Back With A Vengeance" didn't seem quite as hysterical as she/he was a few years ago but if you've never seen this "gigastar" live, you'll have plenty to laugh at as she tortures several members of the audience. You might want to sit in the cheap seats upstairs if you don't like the idea of being dragged up on stage. Try to catch a gladiola at the end of the show.

Foxy:

I saw her a few years ago when she was last on Broadway. The best seat they had left was one orchestra first row, dead center seat. I walked around the block to pump up my courage to sit bullseye in front of her, then came back to the theatre and bought the ticket for afternoon performance the next day.

That day I was at the Met and realized the time had gotten away from me and I might end up late-which being in that seat would guarantee that she pick on me. The bus down 5th Ave was stuck in traffic and I just got off and ran the whole way along Central Park and then to 46th street theatre. I got there just before the curtain opened and so did the couple next to me who were also panting from running to the theatre. We briefly talked about how we knew that we could not be late. I was called upon by Dame Edna to shake or kiss her hand and waive my gladiola in a sexy way to her, which I'm sure I turned bright red in the face.

I laughed the whole time she was performing. I don't think I have ever laughed that hard for that long in my life. Also, I was scarred during most of the performance and relieved that I wasn't called on to talk with her or come on stage to eat a meal during second half show.

I have fond memories of that trip to NYC. So 6 plays/musicals during that weekend. I highly recommend seeing Dame Edna this go around on Broadway.

I saw Dame Edna when I was in New York two weeks ago. Like John, don't think that I ever laughed so hard in my life. However, my friends saw her the night after I did, had seen her before and said that there was a lot of repeat stuff.
