I tested for and came up positive for "Low T"... I consulted a doctor about hormone replacement to increase energy levels and sex drive... I have other medical issues like high BP and cholesterol, and a mal-functioning kidney, and was advised NOT to go down the hormone road since it can create a lot more problems in MY case than solve. A lot of doctors will just prescribe them willy-nilly... You need to consult a reputable doctor that you TRUST.

Yeah that's what's been holding me back. I was thinking of checking out the NYU Men's Center figuring they are more likely to have their shit together than one of those clinics.

I took testosterone for around 1-1/2 years starting about 2009-2010. My last dose was either late 2011 or early 2012. My level wasn't below normal. But it was definitely on the low side of normal. I told my urologist my libido was down, and I think I told him it might be due to depression too-or if I didn't tell him that-I certainly thought it.

The urologist told me that while my testosterone wasn't technically below normal, it was on the lower side of normal and obviously too low for me if my libido was low and I was having trouble getting erections. I also found out at the same time that I was hypothyroid. I told the urologist that I would prefer seeing how the thyroid treatment worked before giving myself testosterone injections. (My own online research had suggested that if testosterone was going to work at all, the injections stood a better chance than the cream).

The thyroid hormone may have helped a bit. But it was nothing dramatic. So I started taking 200 micrograms of testosterone cypionate every other week. I injected myself in my outer thigh. I was out of town when the prescription was all aranged. And I was eager and wanted to start immediately. Since I couldn't go into his office to have the nurse show me how to do the injections, I found a how-to on YouTube. Interestingly enough most of the how-to videos I found on YouTube were by FTM transsexuals. I backed that up with directions from online nursing manuals and diabetic instructions to make sure the information in the videos was correct.

The injections weren't actually as difficult as I had been imagining. In fact I just had a finger stick earlier this week, as part of my routine HIV testing. The finger stick hurt me a lot more than my self-injections ever did. And the ache from the finger stick has persisted.

While my testosterone moved solidly into the upper reaches of the normal range, I was never actually sure it helped my libido or my erections (although from what I read, there's no evidence of testosterone actually improving erections-only libido). I never had any mood swings on it (at least no more than my usual;)). And I never developed acne or back-ne from it.

I ended up moving away for a year while I was trying to decide whether to remain on it or not. My new urologist thought what my previous urologist had told me about my low normal level being 'too low' for me as ridiculous. So I don't know if I should have ever been on it or not. :(
