After the newest museum of The Smithsonian, The African American Museum of History and Culture opened yesterday, I said to myself that I must venture there sometime during the spring of 2017. Other than the Hotel Palomar being a possibility for my staying, what other hotels would you guys recommend that are in the DC area and not too far from the cultural and historical institutions? I'll patiently await! :) :)

Close to the Mall and all the Smithsonian Museums are the JW Marriott, The Willard, Hotel W, the very cheap tourist Hotel Harrington. There's also a Holiday Inn just south of the Mall that's pretty reasonable.

My next door neighbor was able to go to the new museum opening day. She said it's not to be missed, one of the best museums she's been to, informative, sensitive, moving.

Also consider any of the Kimpton brands in addition to Palomar. Hotel Rouge, the Madera, the Donovan and Monaco are good choices.

Another upscale option would be the Mandarin Oriental. It's near the mall but off the beaten path from downtown. It's closer to the Jefferson Memorial.

Spring is a good time to visit but rates in DC can fluctuate dramatically. Hotel availability ebbs and flows depending on the Congressional calendar as well as the convention business.

The Cherry Blossom festivities run from late March into early April and rates get seriously outrageous. I hate cherry blossom season as traffic becomes a nightmare due to tourists and locals wandering around the Tidal Basin looking at trees. The crowd gets so bad you spend more time navigating around the people than enjoying the blossoming.

Do you mean close to the Mall/Smithsonian?

JW Marriott Pennsylvania Ave and 14th St NW

W Hotel 15th St and F St NW

Saint Regis 16th St and K St NW was just renovated, it's only 4 blocks north of the White House

Don't stay at the Mandarin Oriental on MD Avenue it looks close to the Mall and it is but it's an area where there's but offices and after 5 PM is empty and I'm sure you'd like to take a walk to the Mall at night, it's also outrageously expensive for what it is. The Virginia Railways goes right next to it, too loud...

The Hay Adams has very small and dated rooms.

The Palomar, Rouge, and others are not far from the area, is all very walkable and safe, don't believe Trump this city is not Detroit and Baltimore but it used to be just like that.

When I come to the DC area, I usually stay in the Crystal City area near DCA airport. I just get my luggage, and hop on the hotel shuttle to the hotel--no fuss. From there it's a few stops on the metro to the mall or wherever. There are lots of great restaurants in the area, including a delightful gay bar/restaurant. And if I want to go out of town to sights outside of DC, just jump on the hotel shuttle and rent a car from DCA.

Three stops to L'Enfant Plaza:

TREMENDOUS thanks, gents!!!!!! :) This is one hell of a great beginning, for I now have a useful base in which to check, and believe me, I'll do an internet check on each property mentioned.

Sorry I'm late to the party. Great recommendations included above. I tried out the Kimpton Mason & Rook - which is the old Helix refurbished. LOVED it. If you are Karma member, just ask if they can upgrade you to their suites - large living room with Lshaped sofa and an enormous bathroom (by hotel standards). The rooftop pool and bar were great, and the hotel is on a tree-lined street only half a block from the 14th St corridor. Radiator, the hotel's restaurant, has a nice outdoor patio.

Last year I stayed at the Grand Hyatt, 1000 H St NW, in the newly bustling Penn Quarter, and was very happy with it. Lots of good restaurants, bars and shops in the neighborhood, and a short walk to the Mall.
