If you want to see a really great film about the dynamics between two couples directed by Mike Nichols...rent his first movie, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Closer is a bid disappointment. It plays like a bunch of scenes strung together. Adaopted by Patrick Marber from his play, the language is still too "stagey." As for Jude Law, he was awful. Julia Roberts was actually pretty good and for me, Clive Owen was the stud here. Natalie Portman's performance was as good as the writing allowed it to be and was a disappointment after her shining performance in Garden State.

Julia Roberts was good? How could you tell? IMHO, she is like Meg Ryan, in that she plays the same character over, and over, and over, and over, and the only thing that changes is the movie scenario. :o

One of my favorite movies is Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf and I've enjoyed many of Mike Nichol's films, but not Closer. Sexy-as-hell Clive Owen is the best thing about this movie and the rest did an ok job. I was bored halfway through, didn't give a shit about anyone in the movie or what happened to them. If you're going to have unlikeable characters, they should at least be interesting. What character development there was was mostly through a few minutes of what I assumed was meant to be "witty" banter. I really liked Natalie Portman in Garden State, but I think she was miscast in this movie. Julia was good mainly because she wasn't doing her usual schtik. Jude? Well, he looked great. I thought it plodded along and I was glad when it was over.

Thought it was a bit stiff on screen. However, that Natalie Portman has become absolutely luminous, hasn't she. Goddamn she's one sexy kitten. That end scene of her and her flopping tits in NYC was outstanding.
