Obviously I'm talking about my car. :p

A question for the car mavens out in Forum Land. I have a car that has in effect been in storage for a year and not driven. It's a 2002 Toyota Camry. Before its long hibernation, I had at some point changed the oil. The car has about 104,000 miles on it. The oil sticker says to change it at so many months/107,000 miles. Would the oil degrade over time even though it hasn't been driven, and I'm nowhere near the mileage for the suggested change?

I'm no mechanic, but I would change the oil now. Consider the relative low cost of an oil change when compared to major engine problems and rpairs. Especially with a 2002 Camry that should be good for 200,000 + miles when serviced regularly. If money is really, tight, you can probably wait, but I've been told that old oil gets gummy and can harm the motor.

YUP G'man, I would Definitely take that car in for service NOW !

Typically oil will lose its viscosity (its ability to lubricate) by use, not by sitting in your engine block. Oil can sit in a can for 20 years and retain the same quality, and a year is not necessarily a long time for a car to sit. However, an engine with a 100K plus miles on it will also have a lot of contaminants in it, and they will drain to the bottom of the block, so that first start up is not exactly good for the engine. If it was my car, I would change the oil before the first start up, but that's just being overly cautious. If you can't do that, then you will be fine just driving the car until the 107 mark.

And FYI...most manufactures recommend oil changes in the 7k mile range, a good synthetic oil should easily last that long. Changing the oil at 3k miles is excessive IMO, unless you are doing a lot of stop and go driving, or you are unusually hard on your car...ie towing etc.. With a Camry most likely you are not. Don't let these oil change places talk you into excessive changes. That's how they make their money, and if you go to one of these places and they are pumping oil out of some drum from below, regardless if the drum is labeled, go to any auto parts store, buy a good quality synthetic, and bring your own oil to them, (should be about 5 quarts) then stand at the window and watch him put the oil in. That way you know what's actually going in your car... Good luck

What kind of oil should I use-conventional, synthetic blend, or full synthetic?

If you no longer have the owners manual, check with your local Toyota dealer. Call the service dept, and ask to speak to a service manager. Tell him the make and model and the miles you have on the car. He will advise. My manufacture recommends full synthetic. My car just went over the 100k mark also, so I use Kendall racing oil or Valvoline racing oil. I'm not racing mind you, but the racing oils have better viscosity so they take longer to break down, especially in extreme heat, and summers in FTL can be brutal. High engine temps are a cars worst enemy. If you are in the north west, you don't have to worry about that, so almost any good synthetic oil will do. Besides, that Camry was hands down one of the best cars on the planet. It will probably be on the road long after you are gone..LOL

Is this the same car you drove at 4 AM a few weeks ago and you got robbed when you fell asleep in front of your home?

Answering your question, just give it away and buy a new car, next time you fall asleep inside your car so late at night cops might think you're sleeping/living on it and arrest you.

I just went thru this. My manufacturer requires full synthetic, as opposed to a blend, in order to retain warranty coverage. In my opinion it's overkill unless you have particularly extreme driving habits or are in a harsh environment as BVB says. That said, I think many makers are moving in this direction; my suspicious nature tells me this is partially a nod to dealerships because the synthetic maintenance is much more expensive.
