An amazing voice, and a brave lady--diagnosed with breast cancer in 1976 (before she was 30), she was one of the first celebrities to speak publicly about having the disease. In 1978, she received the American Cancer Society's Courage Award, presented to her by Jimmy Carter at the White House. She died at age 31.

 

(BTW, she is the mother of Maya Rudolph.)
