Not surprisingly, I'm more of a fan of Simone de Beauvoir (other than her practice of seducing students and then sending them along to Sartre). Her book The Second Sex is terrific.

 

I haven't read Sartre, but I've read a couple of novels by Camus. Dostoevsky can also be classified as existentialist, as can Kirkegaard.

Slightly oversimplified, existentialism says we should treat existence itself as the purpose of life rather than looking for a fairy-tale ending, a rescuer, or a strongman.

The ABC here aired a mini-series of Simone de Beauvoir's Babies. As I remember it was very good. But hell, I just googled it and it was almost 20 years ago.

Also, those students were female. So there might not be any sloppy seconds, at least not as conventionally described.
