I remember this at the time. National Geographic had several spreads on this. Sadly, they were never really rescued. They were cut into pieces and moved. Pretty grotesque, actually. No matter how much care was taken, the reality is that they destroyed Abu Simbel in order to move it. Can you imagine cutting the Mona Lisa into pieces and then putting it back together? That is essentially what they did.
