When a Siberian man needs a beer, he needs a beer

Wrapped only in a sheet the man got out of bed, unplugged his tubes, marched out of the hospital, eluding security, and found the nearest liquor store. Picture: Sayanogorsk.info

The unnamed man came round in the Intensive Care ward after surgery and demanded a beer from nurses. Naturally, they refused.

So wrapped only in a sheet the man got out of bed, unplugged his tubes, marched out of the hospital, eluding security, and found the nearest liquor store, called Starik Khottabych, at Sayanogorsk in the Republic of Khakassia.

My favorite (true) story from medical school was when I was a 3rd year medical student, and the whole team was rounding on a patient with pancreatitis (swollen pancreas due to excessive alcohol consumption) at the Harbor-UCLA Hospital (a county facility). The bed was empty. "Where's Mr. X?", asked the attending physician. The 2nd-year resident, pointed out the window, and said "There he is!" and we saw the patient wheeling in his IV pole into the Anchor Liquor Store which was across the street--in his hospital gown with his buns showing. I remember another pancreatitis patient at Harbor-UCLA who we were going to start letting the patient have some clear liquids. When he was told we were going to try a clear liquid diet on him he said "Great! I love gin and vodka!".
