Hi, would appreciate advice from any San Diegans here.

Will be visiting on business, and was hoping to stay in the Hillcrest area. But the only accommodations I can find there look like they're pretty grubby. Anything more upscale in the gay neighborhood?

I don't live there but go often and there is NOTHING at all right in Hillcrest, but just down the hill toward the 8, is the Raddison Mission Valley--nice 3,, probably 3 1/2 star hotel--about 10 minutes away and very, clean, gay friendly and have HS Internet :)

There are a couple of threads from 2003, most of which would still apply. As Flower commented, Mission Valley has a number of hotels, many of which are far nicer than the few available in the Hillcrest area. There are also a number of very nice hotels, including some very good three (Wyndham) and four star (Hilton, Hyatt) properties downtown. Both Downtown and Mission Valley can be easily accessed to and from Hillcrest. If you have time, there is a package available which will be sent to you free of charge from the San Diego visitors bureau.

I would look to the property web sites for the best rates, Orbitz to get a sense of what bargains you might find, and if you are comfortable, I would strongly urge you to get your hotel on Priceline, as presently occupancy is very high in San Diego and room rates are among the highest in California.

Good luck!

If you would like to consider a B&B, I can give a strong recommendation for Mike's Place. The URL is:

Great hosts, who went out of their way to keep out of my hair. The accommodation is a private suite attached to the house but with its own entrance. Nice little sitting area with a fridge an microware - great for quick meals but not for major cooking - nice sleeping area and a great bathroom. Squeeky clean, quiet at night, plenty of parking right out front, less than a minute off the freeway, a five minute walk or quick drive to Hillcrest.

Couldn't have been happier.

Thanks, everyone, for the recommendations.

Mike's Place looks sweet...I think I'll give it a try.

PS: which is the main "gay" beach area in SD?

If you want a full-service hotel, a very nice option in Hillcrest is the Park Manor Hotel. European, and gay-owned. Also a nice rooftop deck overlooking Balboa Park and downtown - the best view in the city. Reasonably priced. Moderate to upscale accommodations. Great restaurant and cool piano bar (well, more of a keyboard, but the bar is very kitsch).

The gay beach is Blacks Beach, off the I-5 (take the Genesee exit and head west, then take a left at Torrey Pines, then a right at the next light, leading you out to the glider port. Go north of the glider port (by this time your on the dirt) and park near the end. You'll notice everyone parked around you is gay. Be prepared for a steep hike down to the beach. Best not to wear flip-flops.

Enjoy your stay! :7
