my older brother died from injuries he got in while serving on a navy patrol boat in vietnam. for generations vietnam isn't something they think about the way those of us in our 50's and beyond do.

When I was in Vietnam, I did not think much about Muhammad Ali. To the extent that I did, it was negative.

 

The question I get most often from young people, especially males, is what was it like to be drafted. When I am asked about the protests against the war, which I participated in before, during and after my military service, my response: Lyndon Johnson and Robert McNamara were never able to convince the American people in general why we were in Vietnam.

 

There is no way to respond adequately to the death of your brother beyond there is now one more person thinking about him: me.
