Just saw for the first time Jake Gyllenhaal in a newly-released Director's Cut of "Donnie Darko" which Director Richard Kelly made in 2001 before Jake became a well known star. The film has since become a cult favorite especially at weekend midnight screenings. While I won't pretend I completely understood the movie, I still thought it was very interesting and was very favorably impressed with Gyllenhalls's performance (plus he also looked great). The movie also includes nice supporting performances by Jake's sister Maggie, Drew Barrymore, Patrick Swayze and Katherine Ross. If you haven't yet seen "Donnie Darko" and are looking for something different, you might want to give this film a try.

Absolutely yes to everything you just wrote. I saw the DVD version when that version came out a few years back and thought it was fantastic. I haven't seen the newest version yet, I read the reviews this past Friday and it's interesting to see how positive the critics are to the Directors Cut. I'm not sure but I think Jenna Malone was in the movie as well. When I first saw the movie about two years ago now, my first impression was the 1950 film " Harvey " starring James Stewart. In movie Jimmy Stewart's character also saw an invisible rabbit but " Harvey " was really a comedy. With " Donnie Darkie " was such a powerful drama that I still suprised it's been over looked all this time. It's certainly one of my favorites. To those who have yet to see it, without giving the ending away, the wing of the plane came as a complete jolt. No one would ever have guessed with the unpredictable ending. From my point of view, this movie is worth watching time again

I, too am a fan of the movie. Check out this link, only if you've seen the film and want to tie up any loose strings regarding plot.

Alot was left out of the original theatrical releaase.

Hope fans out there gain a better understanding of the Sci-fi, romance, fantastical, drama elements of Donnie Darko.

Donnie Darko... GREAT film.

On Jake's latest film, he's playing lover to Heath Ledger ('Brokeback Mountain'). A strange thing i've heard is that he's using a body-double for the nude scenes where there's gay context involved. He's also got a no-M4M-kissing clause in his contract.

While i know that Jake isn't homophobic, i do think there's budding concern on his part on what this new indie could do to his overall image in Hollywood. That being said, i suppose that nothing could have been worse than having to do a movie like 'The Day After Tomorrow' again... ARGH. It may have spelled success at the box-office, but even Jake himself expressed a bit of embarassment at the turnout & quality of the film.

Here's hoping that Brokeback Mountain will put him over-the-top as a bonafide Hollywood player, as he's a talented young guy with the unique looks to back it all up.

Hell, as long as we're at it, would someone make his sister Maggie a star too? She's an AMAZING actress. Definitely one that can seamlessly go from the live theatre to the screen without any speedbumps. Very impressive.

Googling Donnie Darko

There are actually a number of sites, some put together by the filmmaker, which discuss Donnie Darko. There will be a DVD release of this Director's cut and there are a number of articles about the director and the decision to make this re-release, in many newspapers. I am surprised Rod Hagen has not chimed in. This version has had one of the highest per theater average in the few markets where it is presently showing.
