Has anyone gone to Machu Picchu?

I just made a commitment to go with a good friend four years from now. I'm really looking forward to this trip!

WmC... If you take seaboy, be careful. He might not eat much but your must supply him with ice cream. :)

A few thoughts:

  • Are you good in high altitudes? If you don't know, test it out somewhere closer by. U will most likely fly into Cusco and that place is high up in the air, baby!
  • You will, most likely, take a train into Aguascalientes Please give yourselves plenty of time to explore as 1 day doesn't seem enuff
  • Are you guys thinking of hiking it? Pick your hiking times carefully...fog galore!
  • Pay up to stay at a good "fancier" hotel in Aguascalientes ..you won't regret it. I think last time I stayed at Inkaterra, but not sure it is still there
  • Bring a good jacket, the sun can be deceiving as far as warmth.
  • Consider paying for a reliable guide. Ask at the hotel
  • Is this your friend's first visit too? Hope you venture out beyond MP! Arequipa, lake titicaca, and paracas

Thanks for all the great advice!

It is the first time for both of us. We plan to hike a lot locally and then in the Rockies a year in advance to help prepare. Then we have time to do more altitude training if needed.

We will go as part of a organized tour. Too much unknown to go by outselves! :)

I went as part of an organized tour 4 or 5 years ago (a few weeks before they had all that terrible flooding) and had a great time. I did suffer a little from altitude sickness, enough so that I won't go to Lake Titticaca as it is even higher. Even drinking lots of Coca tea didn't help much. The interesting thing is that Machu Picchu is actually at a lower altitude than Cuzco so I was fine sleeping in Aguas Caliente. I did have similar problem though in Quito, Ecuador. The altitude only bothered me at night when I tried to sleep as I had a hard time breathing when I laid down. I actually tried sleeping sitting up but that didn't work well. Other than that I was fine and was able to see all the sites and my appetite was fine.

i went there - maybe 10 years ago or so, and went as an independent traveler... first from lima then to cusco and then to machu picchu by train - amazing trip - i had no problems with the altitude, perhaps it depends on your cardio-vascular health, but i have no idea.

try to go to some of the less well known part of peru - i would recommend investigating a place called iquitos for a very different aspect of the country. feel free to ask more....!

I went to Iquitos on a different trip and then boarded a tiny cruise "ship" (24 passengers) and spent a week on the Amazon. It was an amazing. We got to see how the Riberenos live (inhabitants of the Amazon river plate). They have a hard life but everyone was so nice and really seemed happy. It was wonderful.

If you happen to be in Lima on a Saturday, you have to go to the art market in Kennedy Park. Local artists display their work and there is something there for everyone. I bought a small painting of the cliffs by the Larcomar for $25 (cost me more than $200 to have it framed once I got home). The funny thing is that the next day I went to a little fishing village up the coast and when I was standing on the dock and looking towards Lima, I realized that my painting must have been done right at that spot. Now whenever I look at the painting I remember that little village and how much I love Lima.

And the food is good too! Try lomo saltado and ceviches if you can. If you like spicy/hot food (I do!) try rocoto relleno. It's kinda like a beef stuffed bell pepper but it is hot as hell. I didn't care for the Cuy.
