Good day men,

I am weighing the pros and cons of two destinations for a little vacation I'm taking in September. Right now I'm thinking of Costa Rica or the British Virgin Isles.

I thought I'd ask the MC if anyone's ever been to either Costa Rica or the British V.I??

Escorts or clients response are appreciated. I just want to relax, get out of the city and enjoy the sun and sand.

Can anyone recommend hotels, restuarants or the like??

I'll be on vacation during the 3rd week in September. Anyone familiar with the climate conditions? Thanks gang!

Check out Costa Rica under Escorts South in the archives.

There is some information which I used when I went for two weeks last December; I loved the beauty, the people, the food, etc., but in terms of anything gay-- I was perplexed during the entire time there. ...saw some beautiful/handsome men but NO gaydar so to speak. Write to Kjun ; he's been there and can give you some salient tips. I'll write names of hotels and restaurants when I relocate my materials. We stayed in four to five star digs which I truly enjoyed-- the ambiance and service were unbelievable!

Darling Queerie,

If all you want to do, really, is lie on the sand, then the BVI's will do you just fine. Personally, I can take about 45 minutes of lying on the beach... then I get hot, uncomfortable, bored, and worried about skin cancer (mind you, I am a native Californian who works out-of-doors, thus my set of priorities are a bit different than those of you who are office denizens on the east coast. Looking at my dry, brown arms, a day on the beach on a tropical isle seems like punishment to me.) If you just want to bake, snooze, eat seafood, and get tipsy on fruity tropical drinks, the BVI will be exquisite.

However, you could do all the above in Costa Rica, plus hike in virgin cloudforests, go birdwatching, listen to howler monkeys greet the dawn, take cocktails on the verandah with an active volcano in the background, dance to cumbia with a bevy of eager latin men...

(as opposed to having a bevy of anglican black men play a steel-drum version of "Staying Alive" at you while you smile patiently, politely in the BVI...).

Both countries are adorable, but truly CR offers much more should the sand become tedious.

Thanks Trixie for your insights as Costa Rica is on my "hit list" for my next travel experience. I look forward to hearing more about this beautiful place.

St. Croix used to have a gay resort called "On The Beach" where I stayed a few years ago. It was nice but think it has changed hands and it's name. It's in the American Virgin Islands however.

Trixie got it exactly right. Costa Rica is one gigantic nature preserve. 27 (26?, 28?) different types of climate, numerous active volcanoes, white water rafting, birds from N America, S America, as well as some found only there, .... When I was there a few years ago, the only down side was that the roads were terrible and getting from place to place took forever (I spent almost no time in San Jose or other cities). I stayed at a lush and plush beach resort on the Pacific Coast for a few days, but I wouldn't make a trip to CR if all I wanted was to relax in the sun.

I’ve only been to BVI and cannot compare with Costa Rica.

If you’re going by yourself and looking for company/escort BVI may not be the perfect place.

However the British Virgin Islands offer some great spots to visit and relax: Jost Van Dyke’s White Bay, Virgin Gorda’s Baths (famous landmark) and the very fun floating restaurant and bar Willy-T anchored in the Bight on Norman Island. The BVI have also some great scuba diving spots. Enjoy !

Costa Rica is amazingly beautiful place to vacation. Of all the countries I've been to, the Costa Ricans (Ticos) were by far the friendliest.

In San Jose, I found it easy to find Hustlers in the down town area. It isn't as obvious as in the US, but if you know how and where to look, they will find you.

In San Jose , I felt it was one of the potentially more dangerous places I have been. Keep in mind I've been to Morocco, Rio, Mexico City, NYC, Bogota (I'm only listing places I've been that are known to be possibly dangerous) and San Jose was bad, IMO...lots of kids obviously very high on drugs, almost was pick pocketed and a knife fight broke out 3 ft in front of me. Now anyone that knows me will say that sounds like my kind of place, right?

But even the hotel said at night don't walk AT ALL, take a taxi even if you are only going a block away...there is a hustler scene downtown near the park, but not the greatest. The discos are loaded with very handsome guys, but they didn't seem to be available not only for money but not interested in hooking up...strange in a Latin atmosphere.

Don't know about the Virgin Islands...But I do love the Guys in Cuba, Planning to go down the end of Sept if anyone is interested.

As far as the nicest people in the world I have met, That would be Thailand...even here in the states a lit of people change when they become "Americanised" but I have yet to come across that with a Thai, they are just as nice as they are in Thailand...right Oz?

I've heard similar comments about San Jose, though not that extreme. That's why I skipped it and went directly to Manuel Antonio which is more of a beach resort area. I had an amazing time. I stayed at Villa Roca, a reasonably priced gay owned place with gorgeous ocean views. Across the street is a bigger gay owned hotel, bar, restaurant called La Plantacion. Too busy for me, but nice to walk over to for a meal or a drink. Actually two gay bars in the area. At night locals, gay travelers, many Europeans gather at this very bare bones beach bar. You can lie on the beach and look up at the most beautiful night sky you've ever seen. Sometimes a local guy would walk up and offer weed, and if you looked interested, himself. Here is a link from AOL full of info about gay Costa Rica.

I've been to the U.S. Virgin Islands and to Costa Rica. I'd say Trixie's description comes closes to my experience. For my money, it's CR all the way.

If you go to CR and skip San Jose altogether you'll be doing yourself a favor. I found Manuel Antonio too touristy. Montezuma was much more to my liking, in part because it is more remote. But there are still several surprisingly decent restaurants and a handful of bars. Best of all, though, is the emerald surf breaking on the dark sand of Montezuma's mile long beach.

Unless money is an issue, I recommend flying rather than driving, because most roads are atrocious. Sansa and NatureAir make the short hops for about US$65, something like that. For Montezuma you fly into Tambor and for Manuel Antonio you fly into Quepos.

Oh, and I highly recommend the Highlights Tour, which gives you a sample of the rain forest, cloud forest and Poas Volcano (if it isn't socked in by fog). Five hours never went so fast.

Skip BVI and head for St. John, USVI instead. The BVIs are best enjoyed from a sailboat. If you like to stay on the beach, swim, snorkel and relax, St. John, USVI is the place. The island is a national park. But wait, there's more. If you're into Boricuas and Dominicans, you'll find them in St. John.

But if you must go to the BVIs, then go to Green Cay or Sandy Spit, quintessential desert islands, east of Jost Van Dyke.
