If I had enough money, I'd buy my own train car - think the movie WILD, WILD WEST. One can arrange haulage on Amtrak, but I understand it's a tad difficult. Better to have your own engine.

Let me know how that works JP Morgan.

>>>> Bus meme (into the search box, and images will appear in your search.)

Then you click the pick and go through a couple more steps and then add it as an image on here. If you need help with all this let me know. It's like math there's 2-3 ways to do it the quick ones are hard to remember if your not familiar, let me know and I'll inbox you the info on how to do it !

What a cool idea! I thought you were joking at first until I looked it up and saw that Amtrak does offer this service. And it doesn't look as expensive as I thought it would be.

Between Bakersfield and Fresno, California. On the Freights. Twenty years old and he has been hopping freight cars on the bum for two years. His home, which he has visited occasionally for two or three days at a time, is in Oakland, California. Here his father on Work Projects Administration, his mother who is engaged as a domestic when she can find work, and his married sister with her child live in a small house where there is a crowded and insecure atmosphere. His family is misinformed as to his activities and is not aware of his penchant for freight car travel. At one time he enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps, but he quit after six months because the army routine was distasteful to him, so he went back to hopping the freights. He is a complete hobo and is not seriously in search of employment. He has no desire to travel as a gentleman hitch-hiker. “I wouldn’t thumb. Freights are a lot better.” 4/11/1940

I think that arranging to run your own engine would be much, much more difficult. Tracks in the US are privately owned, and there's not much incentive for the owners to allow it. You might get in the way of their freight traffic.

But it is possible. The Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus train is the best-known example. http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/archive/index.php/t-465836.html
