ENJOYING SEX IN FORT LAUDERDALE

These are my own views, arrived at after considerable exposure, but there may be other views.

Fort Lauderdale has one of the highest concentrations of gay men of any city in the world, second only to San Francisco. They are of all ages. Many young men come to Fort Lauderdale for the climate, to get away from a small town background, to go to one of the many colleges and universities, to get a job in a pleasant climate, to explore their growing awareness of sex away from family and old acquaintances, to live in a very active gay-friendly city. Many older men come to FL for retirement. And men of all ages come to FL, for vacations and permanently, for its pleasant climate, gay atmosphere, cosmopolitan offerings, and burgeoning economy. Some of these men are in committed relationships, but very many are not. Sex comes very easy in Fort Lauderdale. There are many escorts available from Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami, which are really just one big community stretching along the coast from north to south. An escort from any one of the areas serves all of them, and there are many escorts.

But it is not necessary at all to pay for an escort in order to have fun and sex. For young men, Fort Lauderdale is filled with bars and discos which cater to the young, hip, and those who enjoy music and dancing. Very large venues such as the Coliseum, the Copacabana and the Sea Monster, and smaller places such as Cathode Ray and many more, provide places where young men can meet other young men, take off their shirts and maybe more, and connect for an evening or weekend or week of fun. The opportunities are enormous. There is also the gay St. Sebastian Beach right in the center of the Fort Lauderdale Beach where every day gay men young and old gather and hook up. I have never met a young man who said he went to St. Sebastian and tried and came home alone. Opportunities abound, because not only are there all the locals, but there is a constant huge influx of tourists from all parts of the U.S. and Europe. Saturdays and Sundays are particularly busy and active because local students and young workers who have been occupied during the week want to release their tensions and have fun for the weekend. There is The Club, a new, very modern, very spacious, very nice sauna, etc. with a very large private courtyard in back for nude sunbathing downtown; this is always filled with men of all sizes and shapes who are looking. And there are many, many gay coffeehouses, bars, and eating places, indoors and out, of all kinds where you can always easily meet guys.

But there is another very sizable group of gay men in Fort Lauderdale centered on the older guy (40+). Opportunities here may be greater and more obvious than anyplace else in the Western Hemisphere because of the large number of both younger and older gay males who are not attached. There are two major large restaurants/bars which cater to the older gay and to the younger gays who are interested in them. These are very pleasant, well established businesses, where younger guys (21-34) can come and hook up with no embarrassment with an older guy. And older guys can come for a drink or dinner and be sure of meeting and usually hooking up with a younger man who is very interested. I do not understand all the psychological bases for this, but it is certainly very common and real and active in Fort Lauderdale. St. Sebastian Beach (and now also St. Sebastian North at 19th Street) allows older gays to meet younger interested guys with great ease and get a good look at each other as you sit, lay, chat during the day. There is a substantial number of younger guys who like a gentleman, slender or physically portly, over 40. There are a number of bars and eating places, not for dancing, which allow the generations to meet. And frankly, from my own experience as an older gentleman, I have been approached by younger men (they initiated the contact) 1) while walking along the sidewalk by the beach, 2) on the beach itself and not at the gay sites, 3) in the Post Office, 4) while admiring some landscaping, 5) in the supermarket, 6) in Target, etc. Of the above six locations, I have taken guys home from five for delightful rendezvous; the sixth guy, at the supermarket, while obviously much interested, was very shy and my ice cream was beginning to melt. Opportunities seem endless; there is always a good looking young guy nearby; all he needs is a little smile of encouragement. In Fort Lauderdale, the large home improvement store is familiarly known as Homo Depot and is one of the cruisiest places in town. There are a number scattered all over the city, but especially on the (gay) northeast side. Young gays in the early evening, wearing short shorts and boots, tanktop, but little more, can be found in nearly every aisle. The first glance of sweet curved ass or very full basket is always breathtaking.

The whole idea of the warm climate, so most people wear shorts and short sleeved shirts, and you get to see a lot right away, probably helps. When you are all bundled up in Boston or Pittsburgh, it is hard to tell what is underneath. This whole atmosphere, I think, is different than any other city anyplace. I don't know if it will last forever, but right now, it is very hot and nice.

Karl, a heartful, comprehensive and interesting commentary. The younger/older attraction you referred to seems mysterious at first, but on second thought, it is a very natural attitude, strangely enough apparent in all generations through the centuries -- look at Socrates, and he wasn't the first in 550BC along with Alexander the Great who always grabbed a teen male for himself in every town he conquered and then his younger brother on the way back. Numerous famous nineteenth century British poets all took off for weekends in Amsterdam. Most males starting in their late forties and mid fifties "admire" young males. Its normal.

It seems easier for me to understand the older for young, in fact, when in a cuddle with one of my young nineteen or twenty year old dates, they often say they themselves look for "younger guys" starting with the internet and at gatherings. The young for older remains perplexing to me probably because I'm so busy looking around for twinks, on the beach, in the stores, and any other places.

Thanks for your dialogue.

Big Guy,

Oh yes, I will get to Montreal twice more this year, but I am not sure on dates yet; much is going on in my life right now, and not all of it is under my control.

Karl: Hopefully you will make it during either Pride or Black and Blue so I can buy you a drink. Otherwise, I will buy you that drink when I return to FLL.

I will say that I love both places. I will return a lot to FLL, and you captured it well in your report. However, I think I left my heart in Montreal. For the overall consistency of boys and opportunities to play, as well as the ambience (both in the Village and the rest of the city, esp Vieux Port), I have no place that I find more appealing.

Having said that (since you know I am a concrete thinker), FLL has two things that Montreal does not have. And their names are Sammy and Jonathan! LOL

Why compare cities? Do both!

:7 :7

BTW... I realize that you didn't specifically compare the two cities in this post, but I just had it still stuck in my mind from your post in the Strip Club forum, and that is why I brought it up.

Hey, really interested in the commentary on older finding

younger men. Karl; you indicated two restaurant/bar areas

where this is common; where are they. As a "mature" man,

hate the word old, 50 yrs, who is shy and nervous about

looking what's out there; I would love to hear where such

connections take place. I am planning my first trip

to Fort L.; not sure where I'm staying but interested

in places to go. Best, Rocky

There are actually five gay restaurants/bars within walking distance of each other that are good places to see and be seen and to meet. The two specifically for older guys are Chardees at 2209 Wilton Drive (entrance at the back by the parking lot) and Tropics at 2004 Wilton Drive. In between are Tasty Thai, Mustards at 2256 Wilton Drive and next to it George's Alibi with outdoor eating and three bar areas inside. There is also the Java Boys gay coffee shop in this mall area, plus two gay clothing stores.
