Just to clarify Hoo Boy's New Brief a bit: Philadelphia is the first city to actively advertise itself to gay and lesbian tourists without a specific gay event, however, other cities provide funding to their gay and lesbian pride celebrations or to other significant gay events which bring in tourism. For example, the Palm Springs Visitors Bureau publishes a gay guide listing resorts and other activites and events, the San Francisco Hotel Tax funds a number of events such as Folsom Street and the Castro Street Fairs, and New York City, Provincetown, Key West and other areas also actively market aspects of their tourism to gay and lesbian travelers.

Philadelphia is spending $1 million over three years on television commercials, which is somewhat novel.

IKEA still is frequently credited with running the first national television advertising campaign featuring and acknowledging the gay market.
